Astral Traveling 19 X Daniel Melfi – Charles Mingus – Shadows (1959)

Astral Traveling is back for this next session of active listening after a long summer break and we can’t wait to welcome our guest @melfidaniellllllto host this one.
An editor, journalist, researcher in the field of film preservation as well as a founder of @20seconds_magand @famousgrapesrecordings , Daniel’s goal has always been to splice the interests of artistic creatives, thinkers and scholars across various factions and disciplines.
At the intersection of most of these activities lies a record: Charles Mingus’s long lost 1959 score for “Shadows,” the film by John Cassavetes. Saying a lot in a short time about the improvisational approaches of the two artists, the LP was recorded live to a studio audience in a pronounced display of openness and flexibility, alternating free improvisations and rougher takes on well-known compositions.
Coming Monday, we will let Daniel introduce us further to this album and his personal connection to it, before actively listening to it together on Rhinoçéros’ phenomenal sound system, in silence as always. And as always, we can’t wait to see you all there.
