SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 22 x Sera Kalo - Carmen McRae – The Great American Songbook (1971)
DESCRIPTION:‘’Listening to Carmen McRae interpret songs feels akin to the thrill of a secret whispered in your ear. She has a knack for stripping each song down to its naked heart and presenting it on a silver platter. I admire her refined\, yet raw timbre and the honesty she brings to her interpretations.’’ \nWhile inviting a variety of music lovers to share their favorite record with us for sessions of active listening since a few years now\, it’s quite surprising that we never had the occasion of welcoming a musician to close the circle of appreciation and creation. We’re even more hyped that @serakalo_exii will be Astral Traveling’s next guest at @rhinoceros.berlin this coming Monday. \nBefore diving into our usual moment of active community listening\, musician\, songwriter and singer Sera Kalo will share more about how ‘The Great American Songbook’ by Carmen McRae influenced her personally\, as well as in her compositions and performances with her projects eXante and eX. II amongst else. \nCome down to Rhinoçéros this Monday before catching Sera playing in Berlin with her new project eX. II later this Spring. \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Starting with this session\, we will ask for a voluntary donation to thank our guests\, cover our costs and keep buying records to listen to\n✨ Limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played before and after \n \n \nDetails TBA

DESCRIPTION:Listening Session & Artist Talk! \nJoin us in this very special session: Mariá will present her wonderful first solo record and answer our questions after listening to it. Enjoy with us Erosão’s profound sound in which tropicalismo\, jazz and electronic music blend together! \nThe Germany-based Brazilian drummer\, singer\, composer and producer Maria Portugal has been active in the São Paulo music scene for more than 20 years. She recorded\, performed and toured throughout South America\, Europe\, Asia and Oceania with artists such as Elza Soares\, Metá Metá\, Arrigo Barnabé\, Quartabê\, Maggie Nicols\, Anthony Braxton\, Fred Frith\, Nick Dunston and Tomeka Reid. As a composer\, she has been performing and composing original music for dance\, theatre and cinema. Since 2021 she is one of the curators of the Soundtrips-NRW free improvisation program. \nPLEASE NOTICE: Starting from March\, we’ll ask for a contribution of 5 Euro for each session. We love what we do and your contribution will allow us to invite more musicians and invest in both records and equipment. Tickets will be available only at the door. No reservations\, sorry! \n✨ We open 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways.

SUMMARY:ECM Luminessence - Azimuth (1977)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to continue our collaboration with legendary label ECM and  offer you an exclusive listening session of the audiophile re-issue of Azimuth! \nRecorded in 1977 and now reissued in ECM’s audiophile Luminessence vinyl series\, the debut album of the Azimuth trio was truly ahead of its time. Formed by adding Canadian- born trumpeter Kenny Wheeler to the British duo of pianist John Taylor and vocalist Norma Winstone\, the group’s futuristic musical palette embraced hypnotic\, minimalistic pulse patterns\, otherworldly synthesizer sounds\, songs\, collective improvisation and solo flights. In\nrecent seasons\, the number of listeners under Azimuth’s sway has grown exponentially\, as the music has adapted itself to new contexts. And the vast international audience that has heard fragments of Azimuth’s “The Tunnel” as part of a major rap hit in 2023 can now discover the original in its pristine form\, still magical after all these years – as is the whole album. \n  \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played before and after\n✨ No reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot.\nPlease arrive before session starts\, no late admission. \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 30 – Tropicàlia Ou Panis Et Circencis (1968)
DESCRIPTION:This record is one of the few cases where the term “revolutionary” has been used appropriately. Gilberto Gil\, Caetano Veloso\, Os Mutantes\, Gal Costa experimented with the music and created not only a strong political statement against the military regime in Brazil but also the gate opener for the whole Tropicalismo musical movement. Let’s enjoy this masterpiece together! \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ NO reserveration! SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 21 x Moe – Tim Hecker – Ravedeath 1972 (2011)
DESCRIPTION:After a short winter break\, Astral Traveling is back at @rhinoceros.berlin  Monday Jan. 29 to listen to Tim Hecker’s ambient masterpiece Ravedeath\, 1972 with @moe.elamin aka Moe. \nIf you’ve been on any serious dance floor in Europe in the last few years\, there’s good chances you’ve encountered Moe on one side or the other of the DJ booth. One of the most radiant figures of the scene\, his radio shows\, mixesand party series @an.endless.groove and @_black.is are all centering solidarity\, community and an obvious passion for music. \nThis passion clearly also reaches outside the realm of the dance floor and when I asked Moe about a very personal record he would like to present for this session\, the answer came very quickly. In his own words: ‘There’s such a fascinating dichotomy to Tim Hecker’s Ravedeath\, 1972: the constant tension between electronic distortion and organ serenity is just one facet that still moves me today as it did when it was released 13yrs ago. It’s an album I revisit when in need of solace\, and has consistently given me that’ \nMoe will share a few more personal insights before we listen to this masterpiece in silence. A selection of related records will be played before and after. We can’t wait to have you all there 🫂 \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played before and after

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 29 – Maria Faust – Machina (Stunt Records 2018)
DESCRIPTION:2024 FIRST LISTENING SESSION!!!!  \nMaria Faust (b. 1979\, Kuressaare) is an Estonian saxophone player and composer living in Copenhagen\, Denmark. MACHINA\, consists of a mix of traditional musical forms paired with improvisation\, jazz\, and soundscapes. \nIn a musical language of her own invention\, she delivers her original compositional ideas\, a chamber music universe without drums\, but with horns\, two basses\, cello\, and piano\, all in a fascinating interaction with the engines of shing boats sputtering their way through the fog\, the creaks of old rusty hulls\, the hum of the breeze and the call of the birds out at sea. \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ NO reserveration! SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 28 - Devin Gray – Most Definitely (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Devin Gray – “Most Definitely ” (Rataplan Records 2023) \nFor this session we’ll have the talented Berlin-based Devin Gray as guest\, for a Q&A after we’ll listen together to his latest release: “My music is a result of deliberate experimental decisions which often obscure common musical practices\, all the while trying to weave in spontaneous forms from the fringes.” Individual track’s stories deliver unique musical moods: Blues (in the standard form)\, diverse textures such as ASMR\, and hints of “A Night In Tunisia” mixed with industrial acoustic Autechre inspirations. \n«‘Most Definitely’ is an example of just how creative a musician can be with a set of drums and a few additions. Gray explores what he believes the world needs more of – sonic energy. In twenty-three tracks\, mostly delivered at speed\, Gray proves he is continually thinking outside conventional boxes in terms of percussive sounds and rhythm variations. The patterns interweave and create remarkable twists\, and alterations of hue and volume that work together to form a mesmeric soundscape splashed with tonal colour and textural variation. The creativity is astounding\, and the tracks include barely-whispered sections to thunking\, booming timpanic episodes.» (Sammy Stein) \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 27 - The Mattson 2 - A Love Supreme (2018)
DESCRIPTION:DOUBLE SESSION! \nThe Mattson 2 – “plays A Love Supreme” (Spiritual Pajamas 2018)\nJohn Coltrane – “A Love Supreme” (Impulse! 1965) \nJared and Jonathan Mattson succeeded in something that only rarely goes right: paying an hommage one of the most “untouchable” and beloved records in music history. Their fresh\, intelligent and light-hearted version of Coltrane’s masterpiece is a joy for the ears and pays perfectly into the spirit of our series. Let’s enjoy together the 24 minutes guitar/drums duo and –after a short break – the original version. \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot \n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of music we call “genre-challenging: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways. Since 2019 we’ve listened to\, talked about and enjoyed the music of: Napoli Centrale\, Alice Coltrane\, Lucio Battisti\, Okay Temiz\, Mkwaju Ensemble\, Miles Davis\, Soft Machine\, Makaya McCraven\, Archie Shepp\, Franco Battiato\, Talk Talk \, African Head Charge\, Ill Considered\, Herbie Hancock\, Ahmed\, Ornette Coleman\, George Russell\, Om\, Gianni Gebbia\, Nala Sinephro\, Mary Halvorson\, Mali Obomsawin\, Curt Sydnor\, Wilco\, Sonny Sharrock\, Witch‘n‘Monk… \n

SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 20 x Thomas J.A.W - David S. Ware - Live in Vilnius (2009)
DESCRIPTION:Our next listening session will see music promoter at heart\, booking agent and co-founder of @jawfamily \, Thomas\, introduce us to the beauty of saxophonist David S. Ware. \nOne of the most profound and moving live moments that Thomas had the chance to experience\, discovering David S. Ware in 2002 was also the catalyst that led him to start promoting live shows in Berlin\, inviting the likes of Pharoah Sanders\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Doug & Jean Carn\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Robert Glasper\, Kamasi Washington and more to the city. Despite years of working towards it\, David’s untimely passing in 2012 left Thomas’ dream of bringing the fire of his live music to Berlin unrealized. \nHailed by voices as diverse as Thurston Moore\, David Lynch\, Sonny Rollins or James Brandon Lewis\, the transcendental sound of David S. Ware should have earned him a place among the other legends of the genre. This broader recognition unfortunately eludes him to this day\, a consequence of his uncompromising stance to music and life\, as well as his reduced period of activity missing the golden age of the 70s and the jazz revival of the 2010s. Consequently\, most of his music is not available on vinyl\, which also means we’ll get the CD player out for this session 🙃 \nThomas will introduce the main record with personal stories of his connection to David’s music and the Berlin concert that never was. We’re looking forward to share this special moment with you. \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of other records by David S. Ware will be played before and after\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot \n

SUMMARY:Bex Burch - There is only love and fear (International Anthem) LISTENING SESSION & ARTIST TALK
DESCRIPTION:In presence of the artist. \nArtist Talk moderated by journalist Daniel Melfi (20 Seconds) \nBex debut solo album “There is only love and fear” is out October 20 on International Anthem. \nIt didn’t take us long to jump at the chance to organize this listening session with Bex when our friend Maxime L. presented to us the idea.  The disc is so full of magnificent details and emotions that we wanted to share it with you while taking advantage of the very precise and ample sound of our system.\nA deep listening of “There is Only Love and Fear” is a beautfiul journey. \nUK-born\, Berlin-based composer\, percussionist\, producer and instrument maker Bex Burch has employed percussion and hand made xylophones to carve out a unique sonic space for herself. \nHer restless creativity and desire to embrace new musical challenges across a range of percussive instruments has seen her recorded music straddle the divergent worlds of avant-garde\, post punk\, and improvisation with equal success. \nBurch has previously released as part of Boing! with Leafcutter John (their debut was Guardian Contemporary Album of The Month)\, and with the critically acclaimed Strut-released Flock with Londoners including Sarathy Korwar and The Comet Is Coming’s Danalogue. She also runs the band and label Vula Viel and has collaborated with artists from Peter Zummo to Dame Evelyn Glennie. \nBex describes her sound as “messy minimalism.” \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of other records release on Internation Anthem will be played before and after\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 26 - Witch´n´Monk – Outfox (LP 2024)
DESCRIPTION:No mistake in the title! 😊 We’re proud and grateful to present the worldwide premiere of Witch’n’Monk’s new Album ‘Outfox’\, that will not be released on vinyl until 2024. This is an exclusive chance to hear the press testing of the first album since their critically-acclaimed eponymous album was released on Tzadik Records in 2020! \nWitch’n’Monk is the twinning of nonconformist Colombian flautist Mauricio Velasierra and anarchic soprano and guitarist Heidi Heidelberg. The driving force of the duo is a shared commitment to depict the multiverse\, through an un-compromised\, new musical language of composition and improvisation that travels fluidly between forms. This multiverse is constructed with a collection of Latin American flutes radically manipulated with effects and extended techniques\, anarchic soprano vocals that move seamlessly and suddenly between characters and timbres\, analogue electronics and a jazz-punk guitar/bass hybrid. Their compositions are shaped by often sleep-deprived improvisations which they record and use as the central musical layer that are exaggerated at points\, or cut up\, sampled and completely reinvented. Blocks of percussive flutes might emerge\, Stravinskian melodies or bilingual voice riddles and experiments. \nAfter the listening session there will a Q&A with the duo and you will also be able to get your hands on the first pre-orders of their upcoming album. \nRESERVATIONS ONLY!! \n*** UPDATE: waiting list spots are now available here: https://shorturl.at/xDMR7 (Link is also in bio) Please notice that the reservations are valid until 19:30! *** \nWhy a listening session?\nA listening session is an act of reclaiming the art of long format listening. In the middle of a large city\, especially in one as energetic as Berlin\, it creates a thick\, drinkable atmosphere \, a poetic space where music can narrate untold stories and tell them to a congregation of curious minds. This shared listening experience elevates the music and the senses\, reminding us of the love and stories that went into the creation of the LP (long play) record\, where every crackle leaves a footprint on your mind and soul.
