SUMMARY:River Adomeit - Solo Bass (LIVE)
DESCRIPTION:After playing at the Rhino with Paul Brandl last year\, River is back\, this time solo to present his new record “Like Staring Straight into the Sun” made with his trio Flatland Prayer. \nRiver’s playing combines a deep knowledge and appreciation of American jazz and folk music with that of other world traditions\, which have been solidified through tours across Japan\, Brazil\, India\, Nepal\, South Africa\, Israel\, and Western Europe. \nHaving earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and his master’s summa cum laude from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam\, River is now firmly rooted in the Amsterdam music scene\, and has performed with improvised music luminaries such as Jamey Haddad\, Anat Cohen\, Joris Roelofs\, Billy Childs\, and Matt Wilson. \nHis bold and concentrated approach to composition and performance has earned him the title of Jonge Maker for Jazzfest Amsterdam 2024\, where he is using the position to explore unique influences of contemporary Classical music on improvisation and vice versa. \nAs leader of improv-folk trio Flatland Prayer\, River takes an interdisciplinary approach to songwriting\, seamlessly incorporating elements of theater\, visual arts\, and spoken word. \nriveradomeit.com/flatland-prayer \nhttps://flatlandprayer.bandcamp.com/album/like-staring-straight-into-the-sun \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM\n✨ Concert starts 8:30 PM \n✨ Table charge of 10€ p.P\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the live.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 33 - Peter Brötzmann – I Surrender dear (LP 2019)
DESCRIPTION:In this session we would like to remember the late Peter Brötzmann almost a year after his death. Together we’ll celebrate his life and music listening to the last solo record he ever recorded: “When I walk through the woods or stroll through a city I’m always whistling\, tunes I have in my head through all my life\, and the only idea for this recording was to show – mostly to myself – the connection between what has been and what there is right NOW – the one can’t exist without the other.” \nHost for the evening will be Frank Mauceri (@mauceri.frank) musician artist and Senior Lecturer in Music at the Bowdoin College\, Maine\, USA. \n \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp.\n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session available at the door.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways.

SUMMARY:20 Seconds presents Eric Maltz (Live) & Andrea Burelli (Live)
DESCRIPTION:20 Seconds presents two live performances on 25 April\, 2024 at Rhinoçéros to raise funds for the upcoming seventh issue of the magazine. On this night\, experience the sounds of Eric Maltz and Andrea Burelli inside the intimate space that is Rhinoçéros—the original Berlin listening bar—in Prenzlauer Berg. \nCapacity is extremely limited and tickets can be bought in advance online at 20 Seconds or at the link in bio. \nThe bar opens at 18:30\, and the concert starts at 20:30 sharp. \nAll proceeds from ticket and magazine sales go toward the sustenance of the 20 Seconds project ahead of the release of 20 Seconds Magazine Issue 7\, out June 2024. \nEric Maltz: \nEric Maltz is a bricoleur and sound artist who combines land art\, field recordings\, filmic improvisations\, and durational performance to create installations and experimental sound environments. His practice is rooted in the exploration and perception of time\, dream study\, and finding connections between disparate objects. Underlying all is the premise that sound is a vehicle for emotion. \nAndrea Burelli: \nAndrea Burelli is a Venetian composer and musician based in Berlin. Besides her private studies in violin\, tabla\, piano and voice\, she holds a master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Granada and a master’s degree from the University of Bilbao. She has released limited tapes\, vinyl\, and CDs through American Dreams Records\, Lontano Series\, and Rohs! Records under her own name as well as other aliases such as Bodyverse. Her last work\, Sonic Mystics for Poems (of Life and Death of a Phoenix)\, was released in November 2023. \nTimetable:20:30 Eric Maltz21:30 Andrea Burelli22:30 Record selection by 20 Seconds \n€15 online at 20secondsmag.com/store \nPhoto by Daniel Melfi

SUMMARY:Cassie Kinoshi's seed - Gratitude (IARC - 2024)
DESCRIPTION:A Listening Session in presence of the Artist followed by an artist talk\, moderated by journalist @melfidaniellllll (@20seconds_mag ) after the session. \nWhen our brother @jawfamily put us in touch with the good people of @internationalanthem to host a listening session of Cassie Kinoshi’s last effort on their label we were super hyped and grateful about the opportunity. A deep listening of “Gratitude” on the Altecs is a dream. These compositions for a large ensemble are super rich. A great enjoyment with our sound system capable of transcribing all these details! \nIn March of 2023\, Mercury Prize nominated composer & alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi premiered a commissioned suite of music in front of a sold out crowd at London’s Southbank Centre. She wrote the piece–gratitude–for her flagship large ensemble seed.\, in a special augmented formation that also featured turntablist NikNak and the London Contemporary Orchestra. \nFind all details about Gratitude on IARC ‘s Bandcamp \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drops 20:30 \n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of other records release on International Anthem will be played before and after \n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 32 – François Tusques – Après La Marée Noire - Vers une Musique Bretonne Nouvelle (1979)
DESCRIPTION:Session 32: François Tusques – Après La Marée Noire – Vers Une Musique Bretonne Nouvelle (LP\, Le Chant Du Monde 1979) \nFrançois Tusques is one of the key figures in European free music: in 1965\, he created the first French free-jazz ensemble and then turned during the 70ies to more committed and militant music with his “Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra”. \nOn “Après la Marée Noire” Tusques’s compositions weave together elements of jazz\, folk\, and avant-garde experimentation\, creating a sonic landscape that is at once deeply rooted in Breton tradition and boldly innovative. Through intricate melodies\, unexpected harmonies\, and improvisational flourishes\, he invites listeners on a journey of rediscovery\, urging them to see beyond the surface of tradition and embrace the limitless potential of musical expression. \nSet against the backdrop of the infamous Amoco Cadiz oil spill\, which marred the Breton coastline in 1978\, Tusques’s work is more than just a collection of melodies and free jazz; it becomes a response\, a reflection\, and a call to action. In the aftermath of ecological tragedy\, he sought to redefine Breton music\, infusing it with new life\, new meaning\, and new possibilities. This record is not merely a homage to the past; it’s a manifesto for the future. \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session available at the door.

SUMMARY:First Listen Session: Shabaka – Perceive its beauty\, Acknowledge its Grace (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Exclusiv First Listen Session of the new Shabaka record\, his very first full LP!\n(Official street date April 12) \nThanks to @impulserecords \, we will have an exclusive album playback before album release. \nThe record will be played from 6:30 PM and a second time at 8:30 PM . \nPlease note that this event is not a usual listening session in the way we do it on mondays. Records.

SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 22 x Sera Kalo - Carmen McRae – The Great American Songbook (1971)
DESCRIPTION:‘’Listening to Carmen McRae interpret songs feels akin to the thrill of a secret whispered in your ear. She has a knack for stripping each song down to its naked heart and presenting it on a silver platter. I admire her refined\, yet raw timbre and the honesty she brings to her interpretations.’’ \nWhile inviting a variety of music lovers to share their favorite record with us for sessions of active listening since a few years now\, it’s quite surprising that we never had the occasion of welcoming a musician to close the circle of appreciation and creation. We’re even more hyped that @serakalo_exii will be Astral Traveling’s next guest at @rhinoceros.berlin this coming Monday. \nBefore diving into our usual moment of active community listening\, musician\, songwriter and singer Sera Kalo will share more about how ‘The Great American Songbook’ by Carmen McRae influenced her personally\, as well as in her compositions and performances with her projects eXante and eX. II amongst else. \nCome down to Rhinoçéros this Monday before catching Sera playing in Berlin with her new project eX. DESCRIPTION:Listening Session & Artist Talk! \nJoin us in this very special session: Mariá will present her wonderful first solo record and answer our questions after listening to it. Enjoy with us Erosão’s profound sound in which tropicalismo\, jazz and electronic music blend together! \nThe Germany-based Brazilian drummer\, singer\, composer and producer Maria Portugal has been active in the São Paulo music scene for more than 20 years. She recorded\, performed and toured throughout South America\, Europe\, Asia and Oceania with artists such as Elza Soares\, Metá Metá\, Arrigo Barnabé\, Quartabê\, Maggie Nicols\, Anthony Braxton\, Fred Frith\, Nick Dunston and Tomeka Reid. As a composer\, she has been performing and composing original music for dance\, theatre and cinema. Since 2021 she is one of the curators of the Soundtrips-NRW free improvisation program. \nPLEASE NOTICE: Starting from March\, we’ll ask for a contribution of 5 Euro for each session. We love what we do and your contribution will allow us to invite more musicians and invest in both records and equipment. Tickets will be available only at the door. No reservations\, sorry! \n✨ We open 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:ECM Luminessence - Azimuth (1977)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to continue our collaboration with legendary label ECM and  offer you an exclusive listening session of the audiophile re-issue of Azimuth! \nRecorded in 1977 and now reissued in ECM’s audiophile Luminessence vinyl series\, the debut album of the Azimuth trio was truly ahead of its time. Formed by adding Canadian- born trumpeter Kenny Wheeler to the British duo of pianist John Taylor and vocalist Norma Winstone\, the group’s futuristic musical palette embraced hypnotic\, minimalistic pulse patterns\, otherworldly synthesizer sounds\, songs\, collective improvisation and solo flights. In\nrecent seasons\, the number of listeners under Azimuth’s sway has grown exponentially\, as the music has adapted itself to new contexts. And the vast international audience that has heard fragments of Azimuth’s “The Tunnel” as part of a major rap hit in 2023 can now discover the original in its pristine form\, still magical after all these years – as is the whole album. \n  \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played before and after\n✨ No reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot.\nPlease arrive before session starts\, no late admission. \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 30 – Tropicàlia Ou Panis Et Circencis (1968)
DESCRIPTION:This record is one of the few cases where the term “revolutionary” has been used appropriately. Gilberto Gil\, Caetano Veloso\, Os Mutantes\, Gal Costa experimented with the music and created not only a strong political statement against the military regime in Brazil but also the gate opener for the whole Tropicalismo musical movement. Let’s enjoy this masterpiece together! \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ NO reserveration! SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 21 x Moe – Tim Hecker – Ravedeath 1972 (2011)
DESCRIPTION:After a short winter break\, Astral Traveling is back at @rhinoceros.berlin  Monday Jan. 29 to listen to Tim Hecker’s ambient masterpiece Ravedeath\, 1972 with @moe.elamin aka Moe. \nIf you’ve been on any serious dance floor in Europe in the last few years\, there’s good chances you’ve encountered Moe on one side or the other of the DJ booth. One of the most radiant figures of the scene\, his radio shows\, mixesand party series @an.endless.groove and @_black.is are all centering solidarity\, community and an obvious passion for music. \nThis passion clearly also reaches outside the realm of the dance floor and when I asked Moe about a very personal record he would like to present for this session\, the answer came very quickly. In his own words: ‘There’s such a fascinating dichotomy to Tim Hecker’s Ravedeath\, 1972: the constant tension between electronic distortion and organ serenity is just one facet that still moves me today as it did when it was released 13yrs ago. It’s an album I revisit when in need of solace\, and has consistently given me that’ \nMoe will share a few more personal insights before we listen to this masterpiece in silence. A selection of related records will be played before and after. We can’t wait to have you all there 🫂 \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played before and after

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 28 - Devin Gray – Most Definitely (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Devin Gray – “Most Definitely ” (Rataplan Records 2023) \nFor this session we’ll have the talented Berlin-based Devin Gray as guest\, for a Q&A after we’ll listen together to his latest release: “My music is a result of deliberate experimental decisions which often obscure common musical practices\, all the while trying to weave in spontaneous forms from the fringes.” Individual track’s stories deliver unique musical moods: Blues (in the standard form)\, diverse textures such as ASMR\, and hints of “A Night In Tunisia” mixed with industrial acoustic Autechre inspirations. \n«‘Most Definitely’ is an example of just how creative a musician can be with a set of drums and a few additions. Gray explores what he believes the world needs more of – sonic energy. In twenty-three tracks\, mostly delivered at speed\, Gray proves he is continually thinking outside conventional boxes in terms of percussive sounds and rhythm variations. The patterns interweave and create remarkable twists\, and alterations of hue and volume that work together to form a mesmeric soundscape splashed with tonal colour and textural variation. The creativity is astounding\, and the tracks include barely-whispered sections to thunking\, booming timpanic episodes.» (Sammy Stein) \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n
