SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 41 - James Brandon Lewis\, Red Lily Quintet – Jesup Wagon (Tao Forms 2021)
DESCRIPTION:Jesup Wagon honours the great agricultural scientist\, inventor\, and artist George Washington Carver´s life and accomplishments. Lewis combines jazz\, blues and gospel to create a musical story as lively and insightful as Carver’s legacy. Jesup Wagon blends intricate melodic lines with rhythmic depth\, incorporating elements of African American folk traditions and invoking the spiritual and cultural heritage that Carver championed in his work.\nThe title “Jesup Waggon” relates to Carver’s mobile agricultural education wagon\, which he used to introduce new farming practices to rural communities—a symbol of empowerment and resilience that is echoed in Lewis’ songs.\n\nBy celebrating Carver’s life through music\, James Brandon Lewis doesn’t just commemorate an influential figure; he bridges history and contemporary thought\, calling listeners to reflect on the intersections of creativity\, community\, and cultural heritage.\n\n\n\n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session will be charged on the drinks. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n\n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways.

SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazzcats: Ornette Coleman And Charlie Haden – Soapsuds\, Soapsuds (1979)
DESCRIPTION:Soapsuds\, Soapsuds (1977)\, ein Duo-Album von Ornette Coleman und Charlie Haden. \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n

SUMMARY:The Growth Eternal (Leaving Records - L.A.) LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Support: merma suelo (mexico)\nDoors 06:30 PM \nLive 08:00 PM \nTickets 15€ available at the door \nFor our second live performance this year\, Rhinoceros is excited to present two groundbreaking artists\, backed by the rich history of jazz bass and ambient music\, whose work challenges conventions and invites us to envision a more heartfelt future. Their innovative sounds open our bodies and minds to new possibilities\, where sensitivity and creativity intertwine—a future where we could be closer to nature and to our own nature. \nThe Growth Eternal is a spiritual bass & vocoder music project. Tulsa\, Oklahoma native Ghalani started the project in 2018 for their mental health\, feeling disillusioned with college jazz academia while trying to connect with their ancestral lineage. They started making music with plants to shine a light on plant’s self-sovereignty and give praise to the wisdom of plant life. Ghalani’s music textures take you on an emotional journey\, using sound as medicine by weaving through genres in a way that feels grounded and refreshingly innovative at the same time. \nmerma suelo is a multifaceted poet traveling between layers to listen and transform the living and emerging relational dynamics with and within her. For this\, they focus on sound\, water and practices like ritual\, divination and romance. merma creates sonic processes aiming to share magic and questions\, while allowing space for improvisation\, so that something new may come. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazz Cats: Annette Peacock - An Acrobat‘s Heart (ECM - 2000)
DESCRIPTION:„Incomparable” is what the German weekly paper Die Zeit called this album on its release in the year 2000\, before going on to describe the music as follows: “A high\, warm voice sings fragile songs\, Annette Peacock accompanies herself on the grand piano\, a string quartet models sound sculptures: the time measure from classical music\, the feeling from jazz\, openness from the lyrics\, and a voice of dreams.” \nAn Acrobat’s Heart  is showcasing a more intimate and minimalist approach compared to her earlier\, more electronic and experimental work. Released on the prestigious ECM label\, the album features Peacock’s distinctive vocals accompanied primarily by solo piano\, creating a stark and emotional atmosphere. \nThe music on An Acrobat’s Heart is a blend of classical\, jazz\, and art song traditions\, with Peacock’s meditative piano lines and poetic lyrics at the forefront. Unlike her earlier use of synthesizers and electronics\, the album’s acoustic nature highlights the raw emotional depth of her voice and compositions. This shift in style shows her versatility as an artist\, moving seamlessly from avant-garde and electronic music to more contemplative\, acoustic territory. \nWith its sparse arrangements and reflective tone\, An Acrobat’s Heart explores themes of love\, isolation\, and existential longing\, making it one of Peacock’s most personal works. The album was widely praised for its subtle beauty\, offering listeners a chance to hear a different side of her artistry. \nFor the first time released on vinyl\, the 2-LP tip-on gatefold ECM Luminessence reissue is as sonically beautiful as it sounds! \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 39: Niño De Elche – La Vigilia Del Sueño (2020)
DESCRIPTION:La Vigilia del Sueño is a bold and experimental work by Niño de Elche\, a boundary-pushing Spanish musician known for his fearless fusion of flamenco with avant-garde soundscapes. \nReleased in 2020\, this album represents a deep dive into the realms of dream and consciousness\, blending traditional flamenco roots with electronic music\, spoken word\, and surreal atmospheres. \nTrue to Niño de Elche’s artistic vision\, the record defies genre conventions and invites listeners into a dreamlike journey where sound\, poetry\, and emotion merge. \nLa Vigilia del Sueño’s evocative\, abstract sound design portrays the sense of a liminal condition\, lingering between consciousness and dreams\, exploring the enigmatic and hidden aspects of the human psyche. \n  \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session available at the door. SUMMARY:First Listen Session: Roy Hargrove‘s Crisol - Grande-Terre (Verve - 2024)
DESCRIPTION:Exclusive playback of Roy Hargrove’s Crisol – the unreleased album “Grande-Terre” – drops on what would have been his 55th birthday (official release date: October 18). His genius continues to inspire\, and his legacy will always be remembered! \nThe record will be played from 6:30 PM and a second time at 8:30 PM . \nNote that this event is not a usual listening session in the way we do it on mondays. It is an exclusive playback before release\, means\, you are able to talk\, order\, drink\, comment\, come and go. \nPlease\, do always keep in mind\, with respect to all guests\, keep the soundlevel of your conversations as low as possible. \nThanks to Verve \nA bit of background informations about the record: \nIn April of 1998\, fresh off their Grammy win for Best Latin Jazz Performance for their debut effort\,Habana\, Roy Hargrove’s Crisol went into a studio in Guadalupe to record their follow-up album. Until now\, that album\, Grande-Terre\, has never been heard. \nFeaturing an all-star band of Roy’s long-time collaborators\, including trombonist Frank Lacy\, pianist Larry Willis and drummer Willie Jones III\, Grande-Terre showcases Hargrove’s fiery playing\, his exquisite writing and the band’s incredible power and unique sound. \n\nRoy’s untimely passing in 2018 makes us wonder what this band could have achieved if they’d had the chance to continue developing their original approach to Latin Jazz. \n\n#ジャズバー #jazz #jazzmusic #jazzkissa #jazzbar #berlin#bar#microseiki #quadamplifier #altec #vott #A7 #jagush#resørelectronics #jazzcat #listeningsession #activelistening #royhargrove #rhforever \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Negroni Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been part of this for probably 10 years now. While we were never swayed by Campari’s marketing strategy behind the event\, we’ve always believed that ‘drinking for a cause’ adds an extra layer of goodness to a classic drink. Since 2017\, we’ve been donating to various animal welfare NGOs\, and last year\, we started supporting Médecins Sans Frontières aswell. \nIn 2023\, we were able to donate around €200 to each NGO! Let’s aim to surpass that in 2024! \nFor every Negroni Week drink ordered until the end of September\, we’ll donate €2. \nClassic Negroni\, Boulevardier\, Americano\, Ume or even a Sake Negroni you choose!

SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 24 x Amuleto Manuela - Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino - Lo Dice Todo
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Amuleto Manuela for a summery listening session! \nA captivating presence in the Berlin music scene\, Amuleto Manuela’s work spans soundscapes\, sound sculptures\, DJ sets\, and collective listening practices. A sonic researcher and curator at @savvycontemporary and host of ‘The Music Shrine’ on @refugeworldwide amongst else\, her work is deeply rooted in the act of listening. \nFor this session\, Amuleto Manuela will present the album ‘Lo Dice Todo’ by Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino\, a cornerstone of Latin and experimental music. “I find very interesting and powerful the space of experimentation and all the possibilities that open up there. To break self and outer preconceptions and find ‘new’ spaces\, more complex ones. I love from this album and from the work of Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino\, the idea of experimentation with folkloric music from the Caribbean in a space of encounter of many geographies and diasporas of the African World as New York in the 70’s. I love all the spaces in between the music genres they explore as Afro-Cuban\, Charanga\, Salsa\, Jazz\, Funk/Soul\,” says Amuleto Manuela. \nBefore we dive into actively listening Lo Dice Todo\, Amuleto Manuela will share more of her insights on how this legendary album resonates with her own artistic journey and the themes of diaspora and identity that permeate her projects. \nLooking forward to spending this evening with all of you! \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ We will ask for a voluntary donation to thank our guest\, cover our costs and keep buying records to listen to\n✨ Limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records by Amuleto Manuela will be played before and after \nPortrait by Camila Berrio

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 36 – Chakra – Satekoso [チャクラ – さてこそ] (LP Victor 1981)
DESCRIPTION:In Session 36 we’ll start a mini-series dedicated to Japanese artists that operated or are still playing at the fringes of pop and avantgarde – let’s fight the s**tty Berlin summer weather with good music! \nThe first LP will be the new wave / experimental pop masterpiece “Saketoso” by Chakra\, produced by Harumi Hosono. Chakra has been a unique force within Japan’s music scene between 1978 and 1983\, blending traditional Japanese elements with new wave and art-rock influences. The band\, fronted by vocalist Mishio Ogawa\, distinguished itself with its eclectic soundscapes\, intricate compositions\, and a distinct blend of Western and Eastern musical traditions. \n  \n \n_____ \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp.\n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session available at the door. No reservations\, sorry.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways.

SUMMARY:Don Vito - Usual Suspects - Alice Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:USUAL SUSPECTS – ALICE COLTRANE \nA selection presented by Vito Nicholas @postvitz \n“Just as it’s fire’s nature to burn\, it’s meditation’s nature to heal\, to bring peace and uplift you beyond your worldly environment and transport you to a higher plane.” \nAlice Coltrane was a visionary composer whose innovative style combined gospel\, classical\, jazz and Hindustani Classical music. A multi-instrumentalist who excelled on piano\, organ and harp\, music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. \nAfter the loss of her husband John\, she undertook a period of intense spiritual isolation and meditation. She experienced “Tapas” the vital period of this trial – hallucinations in which beings that existed on astral planes spoke to her. Coming out the other side\, she devoted herself to musical composition. \n“Peace and love and perfection throughout all creation\,” music as a prayer for humanity and the cosmic world that guided Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. \nAs with all Usual Suspect nights\, there will be some deep cuts from Alice’s body or work\, where she contributed compositions or played on others’ records… \n

SUMMARY:Anenon - Moons Melt Milk Light
DESCRIPTION:A Listening Session in presence of the Artist followed by a live solo sax performance and an artist talk\, moderated by journalist Stephan Kunze (Zen Sounds) \nAnenon @anenonmusic is the ongoing solo studio and live project of Brian Allen Simon\, whom since 2010 has released multiple albums and EPs to critical acclaim. \n„Moons Melt Milk Light“ is direct\, efficient\, and unwavering in its immediacy. Anenon departs from the electronics of previous works\, and embarks on a reductive\, almost entirely acoustic approach consisting of piano\, tenor saxophone\, bass clarinet\, and field recordings. All of the music was improvised with everything recorded as either a first or second take with no edits. \nMoons Melt Milk Light is a hyper-personal statement contained in a visceral beauty\, a compact record of threadbare honesty and musical prowess seldom found in the musical art form. It is a search for light out of dark\, for the tangible and tactile\, and yet like most art of staying power\, the results remain ephemeral and elusive\, a beauty just out of reach. \n“Loss has been a constant (in my life)\, and I wanted to express a deep acceptance of this\, but also a pervasive feeling that these kinds of sadnesses are what beauty is derived from\, that it doesn’t come from perfection. I find the idea of perfect beauty completely banal. Tension matters.” \n„Moons Melt Milk“ is released on Tonal Union\, an Independent record label imprint run by Adam Heron. Formed in 2022 as an outlet for genre-blurring works and with an ethos to seek out unique forms of sound expression. @tonalunion \n✨ Doors 6:30\n✨ Needle Drops 8:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\n✨ Ticket 12€ at the door – limited capacity –\n✨ No reservations.
