SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 50: Canzoniere del Lazio – Miradas (1977)
DESCRIPTION:“Miradas” is a 1977 album by Canzoniere del Lazio\, a groundbreaking Italian folk-rock collective known for blending traditional music from Southern Italy with global influences. On Miradas\, the band expands its sonic palette further\, incorporating elements from Arabic\, Balkan\, and African musical traditions. The result is a richly textured\, rhythmically adventurous work that bridges folk authenticity with avant-garde experimentation. With politically engaged lyrics and virtuosic musicianship\, Miradas captures the spirit of the 1970s Italian counterculture while reaching beyond national borders in its musical vision.

SUMMARY:J.Walia - Blue In Green
DESCRIPTION:We are very glad to welcome Joseph Walia behind the turntables\, a tailor\, photographer\, deep listener\, and longtime companion of us at Rhinoceros. For three years\, he lived between the bar’s shadows\, his neighborhood Wedding\, and the hum of blue notes\, shaping further a sensibility rooted in melancholy\, beauty\, and depth. \nNow back from Japan for a moment\, expect a deeply atmospheric set\, from Charles Mingus to Michel Petrucciani\, John Coltrane\, Mal Waldron\, Miles Davis\, and Duke Ellington\, just to name a few. Joseph’s selection isn’t about nostalgia\, but presence: music that lingers\, sways\, and speaks. \nTo complement the music\, we’ll be pouring rare wines by the glass\, wines with tension\, content\, clarity and honesty.

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 49: Emmanuelle Parrenin – Maison Rose (1977)
DESCRIPTION:Part one of our mini series dedicated to out-folk: Emmanuelle Parrenin’s  dreamy\, psychedelic folk masterpiece.\nWhat makes Maison Rose unique is the fusion between the experiences of Emmanuelle Parrenin\, who collected traditional songs in rural areas in a similar vein of Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins and the electroacoustic background of Bruno Menny\, who arranged and recorded the album. This alchemy created a perfect marriage of tradition and experimentation.\n\n\n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro fee will be charged on the first order. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:Listening Session: Ichiko Aoba - Luminescent Creatures (2025)
DESCRIPTION:On July 7th\, a listening session will take place for Ichiko Aoba’s latest album\, Luminescent Creatures.\n\n\nThis album was inspired by bioluminescent plankton and the mysterious creatures of the deep sea. \nIt is a work that traces “the unseen” — the light\, life\, and emotions of the deep ocean. \nFlowing throughout the album is a sense of the subtle glow of the sea and a quiet resonance with nature. \nRather than traditional music\, it weaves moments like the breath before a voice\, the presence before a sound. \nI chose the intimate and gentle space of Rhinoceros to share this quietly glowing world. \nI hope we can spend time together in that dreamlike space\, listening closely to the faint flickers of life. \n\nKazumi\n\n  \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5€ fee will be charged on your first drink order. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 48: Maxine Troglauer – Hymn (2025)
DESCRIPTION:We’re more than stoked to have Maxine as a guest\, presenting her first LP “Hymn”. An album that not only moves effortlessly between past decades and genres\, but also freely between entire centuries. Her compositions and playing instructions range from baroque to classical to modern jazz\, to the avant-garde of our time and back again. \nChoosing to become a bass trombonist in today’s world takes talent\, courage\, and passion — all qualities that Maxine Troglauer embodies. Born in 1995 in Wiesbaden and now based in Berlin\, she has quickly risen to become one of Germany’s leading bass trombonists at just 30 years old. After completing a two-year Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York under legendary bass trombonist David Taylor in 2021\, Troglauer took on a diverse range of musical projects. These included performances with the Munich Symphony Orchestra\, ECM jazz pianist Florian Weber\, and the HR Big Band. Troglauer’s artistic vision is to bridge cultural divides rather than reinforce outdated genre boundaries. Whether in jazz\, classical\, contemporary\, or improvised music — she sees no strict lines\, only creative opportunities. Her sound is rich and distinctive: simultaneously grand and humble\, light yet deeply emotional — transcending traditional categories and resonating beyond everyday concerns. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n  \n \n\nPlease note that this event was initially planned for Monday June 16th and has been rescheduled.

SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazzcats: OVERSÁEZ - Abstract emotions (Boomslang Records - 2025)
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome you to the third edition of the Symposium for Jazzcats this year\, where we continue our exploration of this years central question: What does “free” mean in the context of jazz? \nThis time\, we’re thrilled to host Sandro Sáez from the trio OVERSÁEZ\, as we also celebrate the release of their debut album\, Abstract Emotions\, on Boomslang Records. OVERSÁEZ — a Berlin-based piano trio featuring Sáez\, Westergaard\, and Ott — recorded the album in January 2025 at the legendary MPS Studio in Villingen. \nTheir music blends elements of European classical traditions\, jazz\, and open improvisation. The result is a sound that moves seamlessly between carefully structured compositions and spontaneous\, intuitive freedom — a perfect fit for our ongoing theme. \nOur previous sessions touched on different facets of “freedom” in jazz: \nIn the first session\, we hosted Joe Hertenstein with his Core Trio + Matthew Shipp\, where we discussed the democratic nature of group improvisation. \nIn the second session\, we explored Ornette Coleman’s “Free Jazz”\, a radical concept that pushed the idea of freedom beyond composition and improvisation\, even into the recording process itself\, by placing the two simultaneously playing quartets in separate stereo channels: one on the left\, the other on the right. \nNow\, with OVERSÁEZ\, we continue the conversation. We’re eager to hear their music — and their thoughts — on what it means to play and create freely within jazz today. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday! \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stemeseder-Lillinger - Penumbra II (Plaist Records - 2025)
DESCRIPTION:We will gather on this late spring Monday evening to listen to Stemeseder-Lillinger’s latest effort\, Penumbra II\, to be released on Plaist Records later this month. \nIn presence of the Artists\, STEMESEDER-LILLINGER a collaborative producer-duo of composer-performers Elias Stemeseder (b. 1990) and Christian Lillinger (b. 1984). \nDrawing from various strains of contemporary and historic music and sound art practices\, the duo’s work makes use of a wealth of compositional strategies\, instruments\, and production methods\, seeking to create an uncompromisingly personal sonic idiom through synthesis of disparate modes of musical thought. This has been documented via the LP releases PENUMBRA\, ANTUMBRA\, and the upcoming PENUMBRA II (all on Plaist Records)\, as well as through a series of video works. A central pillar of the duo’s artistic practice is collaboration with contemporaries\, which has been documented in their UMBRA catalogue on Intakt Records and features guest artists such as Craig Taborn\, Peter Evans\, and DoYeon Kim. SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazzcats: The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet – Free Jazz (1961)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second session of Symposium for Jazzcats in 2025 – this time exploring the question: Free – what does it mean in the context of Jazz? \nWe invite you to immerse yourself in a landmark of sonic exploration:  \nOrnette Coleman Double Quartet’s Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. Released in 1961\, this genre-defining album challenged the boundaries of structure\, harmony\, and improvisation\, opening up a new frontier in jazz. \nColeman brought together two separate quartets—each recorded on its own stereo channel—creating a dynamic left-right interplay that allows us\, the listeners\, to experience a true conversation in sound. What unfolds is a continuous\, unedited 37 minutes long performance where freedom doesn’t mean chaos\, but a new kind of order—a collective language built in real time. \nSo lean in\, listen deeply\, and let’s explore together: what does free really mean in the context of jazz? \n__________________________________________________ \nLeft Channel Quartet \n\n\nOrnette Coleman – Alto Saxophone \n\n\nDon Cherry – Pocket Trumpet \n\n\nScott LaFaro – Double Bass \n\n\nBilly Higgins – Drums \n\n\n__________________________________________________ \nRight Channel Quartet \n\n\nEric Dolphy – Bass Clarinet \n\n\nFreddie Hubbard – Trumpet \n\n\nCharlie Haden – Double Bass \n\n\nEd Blackwell – Drums \n\n\n  \n \nCover Painting: Jackson Pollock \n__________________________________________________ \n✨ We open 6:30 PM\, needle drop 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 46: Silvia Tarozzi - Mi Specchio E Rifletto
DESCRIPTION:Silvia Tarozzi\, inspired by the poet Alda Merini and her studies with composer Garret List\, worked with intimate personal history to write songs of love\, motherhood\, and the mystery hidden behind the curtain of everyday life. Over the course of nearly a decade\, Tarozzi practiced setting the poetry of Alda Merini to music and then replacing it with her own to reflect her own life experiences. As a result\, „Mi specchio e rifletto“ feels both poetic and earnestly autobiographical. \nA longtime collaborator of Eliane Radigue and a talented free improvisor\, Tarozzi inspires as sensitive awareness while echoing progressive music forebearers. Past masterpieces reverberate throughout: the gentle chamber explorations of Penguin Cafe Orchestra\, the science fiction of Franco Battiato’s ‘Fetus’\, the abstract free jazz flourishes of Maria Monti’s Il Bestiario\, the sweetness of Caterina Caselli’s Primavera. \n« […] Tarozzi first set poems by Italian writer Alda Merini to music (Merini’s ‘Aphorisms’ contains the lines: “I sample sin as if it were/ the beginning of well-being”) then removed those words and replaced them with her own lyrics. The songs now have the same luxurious and gauzy unreality that I love Battiato and Monti for\, structured as if Tarozzi is crafting intimate emotional dioramas. She tiles miniature rooftops in sung patterns; wiry shrubbery in plucked strings; shapes of birds in watercolour skies with soaring vocals and synthesizer washes of colour. I grow more attached to it each day.» (Jennifer Lucy Allen\, The Quietus) \n \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ Table charge of 5€ p.P.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 45: Kink Gong – Myth [神话] (2023 Bié Records)
DESCRIPTION:Kink Gong’s Myth is a hypnotic and disorienting journey through the fringes of traditional music and electronic deconstruction. Laurent Jeanneau continues his exploration of Southeast Asian field recordings\, warping and weaving them into something entirely new—part archival document\, part sonic hallucination. Unlike some of his earlier works that lean more on raw ethnographic recordings\, Myth embraces a deeply textural and surreal approach. Familiar sounds—plucked strings\, chanted vocals\, and ritualistic percussions—are stretched\, layered\, and manipulated into haunting\, dreamlike compositions. The album feels like it exists in a liminal space\, where ancient sounds meet the ghosts of future electronic landscapes. \nLaurent Jeanneau\, a nomadic musician and DIY ethnographer\, established his recording archive and composition project\, Kink Gong\, in 1999. His journey began in 1991 when he left his homeland of France to travel solo from Kenya to Nigeria. Over the years\, he has made numerous trips across Southeast Asia—including Cambodia\, Laos\, Vietnam\, China\, and Thailand—documenting the traditional music of ethnic minorities whose cultures are at risk due to modernization. Jeanneau incorporates these recordings into his own electroacoustic experiments\, blending them with other field recordings. \n

SUMMARY:Ōdio Mania with Reinhard Thöress - Puristic Audio Apparatus
DESCRIPTION:Ōdio Mania オーディオマニア is an evening of musical and technical discovery. This evening is for all those interested in musicality and high fidelity sound reproduction. \nFor this first one\, we have the pleasure of welcoming Reinhard Thöress\, a manufacturer of devices for musical reproduction. \nWe met Reinhard last year at the High-End audio fair in Munich\, where we were looking for ideas and partners to perfect our Voice Of The Theater set-up\, which at that time did not fully satisfy us\, and we were immediately charmed by the character and the beauty of the devices in terms of design and sound quality! After a few discussions\, it was clear to us that we wanted to work with this electronics expert and entrust him with the realization of our next material investment. \nWe met again last fall for the delivery of our Thöress F2a11 amplifier and the completely brilliant Phono Entzerer. It was a great weekend of installation and tuning but also of musical and wine appreciation. \nWe are glad to present this evening\, where Reinhard will share the music he loves. He will also be here to answer all your questions about his devices! \nThis event is also meant for discerning audiophiles and the curious alike to gather and exchange ideas or experiences! \n  \nDoors – 6:30PM \nThis event will be hold in English or German TBC \n  \n \n  \nAt the High-End 2024\nReinhard a propos Music: \n“MUSIC…\nMusic has always played an important role in my life. I like all kinds of musical\nstyles… Classical Music\, Jazz\, Rock\, Blues\, Metal\, Fusion\, Funk\, Disco\, Pop…! It never\noccurred to me that one particular music genre is more valuable than any of the\nothers. There is only good and bad music. And I firmly stick to this attitude until the\npresent day. Accordingly\, it is my firm conviction that a truly world-class audio\nsystem should be designed to be NEUTRAL and UNIVERSAL in the sense that every\nkind of program can be reproduced in an equally appealing and convincing way. This\nparticularly includes the requirement that the system is capable of reproducing the\ntimbre of ACOUSTICAL instruments with utmost accuracy. Otherwise the system will\nnarrow the musical horizon of the user\, which from my point of view is an\nintolerable constraint\, if not a sin!” \nA Tribute to Professional Audio Components\nfrom the Golden Age of the Vacuum Tube ! \nReinhard and the Disciples\nChecking.\nConcentration.\nThe Baby is born.\nThöress F2A11 Integrated Amp \nThöress Phono Entzerer

SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazzcats: The Core Trio with Matthew Shipp (Free Bass Productions 2014)
DESCRIPTION:Symposium for Jazzcats: What does free mean in the context of Jazz? \nAs the doors open once again for another year of the Symposium for Jazzcats\, we welcome you for a new series of listening sessions. \nThroughout this year\, we want to investigate with you the word free within jazz\, offering listeners the opportunity to experience how different artists interpret and manifest this elusive concept. The sessions will not only celebrate musical innovation and adventurous listening but also encourage an open dialogue about the evolving musical language of jazz. \nReflecting on the last listening session\, where composed and improvised music intertwined\, this season is focused to explore a concept that has long been central to jazz: “freedom”. With the question in mind\, what does “free” truly mean in this context? Is it merely the absence of form\, or does it signify a deeper liberation—one that transcends the physical boundaries of space and time?  Let us explore some of its perspectives and visions to seek an understanding of its complexity.   \nTo begin with\, we will listen to a recording of The Core Trio\, a Houston-based Trio\, consisting of Thomas Helton on double bass\, Seth Paynter on saxophone\, and Joe Hertenstein on drums. This session is further enriched by the presence of pianist Matthew Shipp\, whose name resonates within the avant-garde\, free and improvised jazz community. His appearance with The Core Trio promises a synthesis of perspectives\, merging his expansive harmonic language with the trio’s dynamic interplay.  \nWe also warmly welcome Joe Hertenstein for the first session. A familiar face to those immersed in Berlin’s buzzing free and improvised music scene\, if so you may have heard him performing alongside musicians like Alexander von Schlippenbach\, Floros Floridis\, or bassist Matthias Bauer. His expressive approach to drumming and his desire to break free from repetitive movements can be seen and heard in the way he rearranges his drum kit and incorporates an additional table filled with percussive objects—ranging from cans and bells to wooden pieces and anything else that helps him create a vast soundscape. This textured foundation allows his band members to explore the depths of collective improvisation with him\, weaving an intricate carpet of sound as they venture into new musical directions. \nhttps://www.joehertenstein.com/ \nJoin us on this journey\, one that seeks not only to listen but to understand\, question\, and redefine the boundaries of jazz \nStay curious!  \nThis recording is a 42-minute free improvisation piece. \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ Table charge of 5€ p.P.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 44 – Cecil Taylor's - Conquistador! (Blue Note 1968)
DESCRIPTION:Cecil Taylor’s “Conquistador!” is a groundbreaking record \, that profoundly altered the trajectory of jazz. \nThe album title alludes to the European colonization of the Americas\, and Taylor’s intense\, abrasive piano playing serves as a sonic representation of this violent and domineering conquest. The music is characterized by dissonance and atonality\, creating a sense of tension and urgency. Taylor’s percussive piano clashes with the lyrical elements of the ensemble\, evoking a musical battleground that reflects themes of power struggles\, colonialism\, and cultural conflict. \nEven 59 years after its release\, “Conquistador!” remains a vital and challenging work\, a landmark achievement in the evolution of free jazz. Through its dissonance\, intricate rhythms\, and underlying political message\, it pushes the boundaries of what jazz can be\, both musically and thematically. \n \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ Table charge of 5€ p.P.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n\nIG: @noroomforsquaresberlin\nEvery 3rd monday of the month at the Rhinocerso Bar in Berlin\n\nNo room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between them. SUMMARY:Flatland Prayer - LIVE
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present Flatland Prayer – live in session for the very first Sunday Service at Rhinocéros! \nFlatland Prayer reimagines songwriting in a free-improv context. The eclectic trio is firmly rooted in the traditions of American jazz and folk\, though always with one foot forward into avant-garde scene. Though their influences are broad-reaching\, Flatland Prayer has a cohesive sound\, with all the clarity and tenderness of the musicians behind it. \nFlatland Prayer is already making a name for themselves in the European jazz scene. This is as much to do with their musicianship as their unique approach to performance\, in which every through-composed set has its own narrative flow\, readily incorporating elements of performance art\, visuals\, and spoken word. For a performance at the Bimhuis as a part of Jazzfest Amsterdam on the 6th of January\, bassist River Adomeit composed “FANATIC\,” an Americana suite exploring far-right extremism. On the heels of their debut album\, “Like Staring Straight into the Sun\,” Flatland Prayer is now embarking on their first international tour\, bringing their unique sound to broader audiences in the Netherlands\, Germany\, and Austria. \nThe Sunday Service at Rhinoceros is a series of live concerts in a small acoustic or minimally amplified setting. Infused with the essence of jazz and maybe the spirit of John Coltrane\, it invites musical talents in an intimate space to create a communal experience. Through shared vibrations and soulful harmonies\, it calls for a sense of unity\, awakening consciousness and a connection to beauty. We hope to hold Sunday Service once per season. \nFLATLAND PRAYER  \nLīva Dumpe – Vocals\nAntonio Moreno – Trumpet\nRiver Adomeit – Bass \nDoors 06:30PM\nShow Starts 08:00PM \nTable charge 15\,-€ \n \n \n \n
