SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 28 - Devin Gray – Most Definitely (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Devin Gray – “Most Definitely ” (Rataplan Records 2023) \nFor this session we’ll have the talented Berlin-based Devin Gray as guest\, for a Q&A after we’ll listen together to his latest release: “My music is a result of deliberate experimental decisions which often obscure common musical practices\, all the while trying to weave in spontaneous forms from the fringes.” Individual track’s stories deliver unique musical moods: Blues (in the standard form)\, diverse textures such as ASMR\, and hints of “A Night In Tunisia” mixed with industrial acoustic Autechre inspirations. \n«‘Most Definitely’ is an example of just how creative a musician can be with a set of drums and a few additions. Gray explores what he believes the world needs more of – sonic energy. In twenty-three tracks\, mostly delivered at speed\, Gray proves he is continually thinking outside conventional boxes in terms of percussive sounds and rhythm variations. The patterns interweave and create remarkable twists\, and alterations of hue and volume that work together to form a mesmeric soundscape splashed with tonal colour and textural variation. The creativity is astounding\, and the tracks include barely-whispered sections to thunking\, booming timpanic episodes.» (Sammy Stein) \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 27 - The Mattson 2 - A Love Supreme (2018)
DESCRIPTION:DOUBLE SESSION! \nThe Mattson 2 – “plays A Love Supreme” (Spiritual Pajamas 2018)\nJohn Coltrane – “A Love Supreme” (Impulse! 1965) \nJared and Jonathan Mattson succeeded in something that only rarely goes right: paying an hommage one of the most “untouchable” and beloved records in music history. Their fresh\, intelligent and light-hearted version of Coltrane’s masterpiece is a joy for the ears and pays perfectly into the spirit of our series. Let’s enjoy together the 24 minutes guitar/drums duo and –after a short break – the original version. \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot \n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of music we call “genre-challenging: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways. Since 2019 we’ve listened to\, talked about and enjoyed the music of: Napoli Centrale\, Alice Coltrane\, Lucio Battisti\, Okay Temiz\, Mkwaju Ensemble\, Miles Davis\, Soft Machine\, Makaya McCraven\, Archie Shepp\, Franco Battiato\, Talk Talk \, African Head Charge\, Ill Considered\, Herbie Hancock\, Ahmed\, Ornette Coleman\, George Russell\, Om\, Gianni Gebbia\, Nala Sinephro\, Mary Halvorson\, Mali Obomsawin\, Curt Sydnor\, Wilco\, Sonny Sharrock\, Witch‘n‘Monk… \n

SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 20 x Thomas J.A.W - David S. Ware - Live in Vilnius (2009)
DESCRIPTION:Our next listening session will see music promoter at heart\, booking agent and co-founder of @jawfamily \, Thomas\, introduce us to the beauty of saxophonist David S. Ware. \nOne of the most profound and moving live moments that Thomas had the chance to experience\, discovering David S. Ware in 2002 was also the catalyst that led him to start promoting live shows in Berlin\, inviting the likes of Pharoah Sanders\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Doug & Jean Carn\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Robert Glasper\, Kamasi Washington and more to the city. Despite years of working towards it\, David’s untimely passing in 2012 left Thomas’ dream of bringing the fire of his live music to Berlin unrealized. \nHailed by voices as diverse as Thurston Moore\, David Lynch\, Sonny Rollins or James Brandon Lewis\, the transcendental sound of David S. Ware should have earned him a place among the other legends of the genre. This broader recognition unfortunately eludes him to this day\, a consequence of his uncompromising stance to music and life\, as well as his reduced period of activity missing the golden age of the 70s and the jazz revival of the 2010s. Consequently\, most of his music is not available on vinyl\, which also means we’ll get the CD player out for this session 🙃 \nThomas will introduce the main record with personal stories of his connection to David’s music and the Berlin concert that never was. We’re looking forward to share this special moment with you. \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of other records by David S. Ware will be played before and after\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. Come early to save your seat in the sweet spot \n

SUMMARY:Bex Burch - There is only love and fear (International Anthem) LISTENING SESSION & ARTIST TALK
DESCRIPTION:In presence of the artist. \nArtist Talk moderated by journalist Daniel Melfi (20 Seconds) \nBex debut solo album “There is only love and fear” is out October 20 on International Anthem. \nIt didn’t take us long to jump at the chance to organize this listening session with Bex when our friend Maxime L. presented to us the idea.  The disc is so full of magnificent details and emotions that we wanted to share it with you while taking advantage of the very precise and ample sound of our system.\nA deep listening of “There is Only Love and Fear” is a beautfiul journey. \nUK-born\, Berlin-based composer\, percussionist\, producer and instrument maker Bex Burch has employed percussion and hand made xylophones to carve out a unique sonic space for herself. \nHer restless creativity and desire to embrace new musical challenges across a range of percussive instruments has seen her recorded music straddle the divergent worlds of avant-garde\, post punk\, and improvisation with equal success. \nBurch has previously released as part of Boing! with Leafcutter John (their debut was Guardian Contemporary Album of The Month)\, and with the critically acclaimed Strut-released Flock with Londoners including Sarathy Korwar and The Comet Is Coming’s Danalogue. She also runs the band and label Vula Viel and has collaborated with artists from Peter Zummo to Dame Evelyn Glennie. \nBex describes her sound as “messy minimalism.” \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of other records release on Internation Anthem will be played before and after\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 26 - Witch´n´Monk – Outfox (LP 2024)
DESCRIPTION:No mistake in the title! 😊 We’re proud and grateful to present the worldwide premiere of Witch’n’Monk’s new Album ‘Outfox’\, that will not be released on vinyl until 2024. This is an exclusive chance to hear the press testing of the first album since their critically-acclaimed eponymous album was released on Tzadik Records in 2020! \nWitch’n’Monk is the twinning of nonconformist Colombian flautist Mauricio Velasierra and anarchic soprano and guitarist Heidi Heidelberg. The driving force of the duo is a shared commitment to depict the multiverse\, through an un-compromised\, new musical language of composition and improvisation that travels fluidly between forms. This multiverse is constructed with a collection of Latin American flutes radically manipulated with effects and extended techniques\, anarchic soprano vocals that move seamlessly and suddenly between characters and timbres\, analogue electronics and a jazz-punk guitar/bass hybrid. Their compositions are shaped by often sleep-deprived improvisations which they record and use as the central musical layer that are exaggerated at points\, or cut up\, sampled and completely reinvented. Blocks of percussive flutes might emerge\, Stravinskian melodies or bilingual voice riddles and experiments. \nAfter the listening session there will a Q&A with the duo and you will also be able to get your hands on the first pre-orders of their upcoming album. \nRESERVATIONS ONLY!! \n*** UPDATE: waiting list spots are now available here: https://shorturl.at/xDMR7 (Link is also in bio) Please notice that the reservations are valid until 19:30! *** \nWhy a listening session?\nA listening session is an act of reclaiming the art of long format listening. In the middle of a large city\, especially in one as energetic as Berlin\, it creates a thick\, drinkable atmosphere \, a poetic space where music can narrate untold stories and tell them to a congregation of curious minds. This shared listening experience elevates the music and the senses\, reminding us of the love and stories that went into the creation of the LP (long play) record\, where every crackle leaves a footprint on your mind and soul.

SUMMARY:Tokyo Jazz Joints - Book Launch!
DESCRIPTION:Come and meet the author\, photographer and co-creator of the Tokyo Jazz Joints project\, Philip Arneill\, for a book signing session which will be followed by a jazz session behind the decks!\n\nBook signing 8:00pm – 9:00 pm\nJazz Records session 9:00pm – 00:00am\n\nAs I have already written\, Rhinoçéros would not be the bar that it is\, without the work of Philip Arneill and James Catchpole\, aka Tokyo Jazz Joints.\n\n\nTheir influence goes beyond the simple reporting and documentation of jazz bars in Japan. Today the number of new openings of “listening bars“ (and I don’t like that term) influenced by jazz kissa is not unrelated to the wide and well-deserved dissemination of their work (website\, events and podcasts).\n\nBut this would also take away from the quality of Philip’s photographic work\, his sense of detail and atmosphere. The long-awaited publication of this photography book is a natural evolution from the website and podcast\, as it always should have been. What emotion to browse these pages and immerse yourself in these incredible atmospheres which come to us from Japan via Philip’s lens.\n\nWe will have some copies to sell on the night from this first hardback edition of 3000.  Already distributed in over 50 countries\, make sure you come and get your book before they’re sold out!\n\nThank you Philip\, thank you James.

SUMMARY:Astral Traveling 19 X Daniel Melfi - Charles Mingus - Shadows (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Astral Traveling is back for this next session of active listening after a long summer break and we can’t wait to welcome our guest @melfidaniellllllto host this one. \nAn editor\, journalist\, researcher in the field of film preservation as well as a founder of @20seconds_magand @famousgrapesrecordings \, Daniel’s goal has always been to splice the interests of artistic creatives\, thinkers and scholars across various factions and disciplines. \nAt the intersection of most of these activities lies a record: Charles Mingus’s long lost 1959 score for “Shadows\,” the film by John Cassavetes. Saying a lot in a short time about the improvisational approaches of the two artists\, the LP was recorded live to a studio audience in a pronounced display of openness and flexibility\, alternating free improvisations and rougher takes on well-known compositions. \nComing Monday\, we will let Daniel introduce us further to this album and his personal connection to it\, before actively listening to it together on Rhinoçéros’ phenomenal sound system\, in silence as always. And as always\, we can’t wait to see you all there. \n  \n \n✨ Doors 18:30\, needle drop 20:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\, a selection of related records will be played by Daniel Melfi before and after\n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. \nCome early to save your seat in the sweet spot \n#deeplistening #listeningsession #listeningbar#activelistening #jazzkissa #audiophile #vinyl #records

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 25 – Sonny Sharrock - Ask The Ages (1991)
DESCRIPTION:“I want to reconnect with the music of John Coltrane. That energy\, that possession\, that power. I want to get back to that level\, that quality again. Make something serious.” \nAn incredible combination of musicians is behind one of the most intense records featured in our sessions: Alvin Jones and Charnett Moffett\, drums and bass\, provide a tight substrate for Sharrock’s ultra-hard and yet melodic guitar; Sanders’ overblows blend perfectly with the hard shredding guitar. An intense\, rockin’\, dense\, and yet spiritually uplifting recording; a fusion of rock sensibility with modal composition\, “Ask the Ages” elevated Sharrock to the Olymp of players that reached for infinity as John Coltrane did. \n  \n \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n✨ No reservations

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 23 – Curt Sydnor – Heaven Is Begun (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Curt Sydnor – Heaven Is Begun (LP Passerine Records 2022) \nPart two of our “American Songbook Summer”! \nAfter Mali Obomsawin’s wonderful blend of American\, Indigenous American and free Jazz\, this time we’ll deep dive again into the US tradition with Curt Sydnor. “Heaven is Begun” is an unconventional foray into the borderlands that separate gospel & secular songcraft. The lyrics speak to themes of doubt\, death\, and unknowability. The musical arrangements feature the masterful vocalist Laura Ann Singh backed by an avant-jazz rhythm section\, operating fearlessly within Sydnor’s own traditional-experimental song structures. \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM\n✨ No reservations. Please come early to avoid disappointment and save your seat in the sweet spot!\n✨ We kindly ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:First Listen Session - John Coltrane w/ Eric Dolphy "Evenings At The Village Gate" (Impulse - 2023)
DESCRIPTION:July 14 is not only Bastille Day but it is also release day of a never before heard recording of two of the most iconic sonic forces in history! John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy „Evening at the Village Gate“ feat. McCoy Tyner\, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones \nThanks @impulserecords \, we received some copies of the record and alongside some other fine venues around the world\, we will have an exclusive album playback before Album Release. \nThis Thursday\, July 13th\, John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy „Evening at the Village Gate“ will be played from 6:30 PM and a second time at 8:00 PM \nPlease note that this event is not a listening session in the way we do it on mondays. It is an exclusive playback before release\, means\, you are able to talk\, order\, drink\, comment\, come and go. But please always keep in mind\, with respect to all guests\,  keep the sound level of your conversations as low as possible. \nNo reservation for this one. Merci! <3 \nAfterwards Alessandro @kassianirecords will select and play related records of Coltrane and Dolphy! \n« Recently discovered at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts\, the recordings on this album—recorded by engineer Rich Alderson as part of a test of the club’s new sound system—were seemingly lost\, then found\, and then disappeared again into the vast sound archives of the Library for the Performing Arts. The tapes’ circuitous route over several decades seemingly mirrors Coltrane’s ongoing musical journey in August of 1961. » \n@johncoltrane \n#johncoltrane #ericdolphy #ジャズバー #jazz #jazzmusic#jazzkissa #jazzbar #berlin #bar #microseiki #quadamplifier#altec #vott #A7 #jagush #resørelectronics #jazzcat#listeningsession#exclusivealbumplaybackbeforealbumrelease #activelistening
