SUMMARY:Teshi’s Fine Hour present: Susumu Yokota – The Boy And The Tree (2002 - Leaf)
DESCRIPTION:Teshi’s Fine Hour is proud to host the ongoing Susumu Yokota World Listening Tour with a full LP playback of ‘The Boy and the Tree’ (Skintone Edition) at Berlin’s Rhinoceros \nDo not miss the rare chance to experience recently remastered and reissued sounds of the classic with pristine and high-fidelity audio at Rhinoceros \nDate: Monday 23rd February  \nTime: Bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM \nNo reservations – First come\, first served.  \nWe kindly ask for silent listening during the session.  \nAbout Boy and the Tree:  \nThe Boy and the Tree was composed after a visit to Yakushima Island\, an outstandingly beautiful world heritage site off the southern tip of Japan\, scored by a deep\, lush and ancient ravine\, home of the ancient 7000-year old ‘Jōmon Sugi’. Tree. Also the inspiration for Miyazaki’s epic anime Princess Mononoke\, a conflict between the rampant greed and destructive force of humanity\, and the stoic\, mysterious fragility of nature. \nSusumu Yokota World Listening Tour: \nSusumu Yokota redefined ambient music with a series of 14 extraordinary albums\, released from 1998 through to 2012. At the height of this success\, he abandoned his graphic design practice and his commercial music career and established the Skintone imprint. His lasting influence and impact on electronic and contemporary music is difficult to overstate. This event is part of a celebration of this legacy. \nFollow @susumuyokotaofficial and @lorecordings and @rhinoceros.berlin for updates on new events.

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 55 – Searows – Death in the Business of Whaling (2025)
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we’re taking a different approach: we’ve partnered with the agency Look Out Kid and are happy to present the music of Searows\, a US artist coming to Europe in March present their new record live. The album’s tracks move from the droning\, banjo-laced opener “Belly of the Whale” to heavier cuts like “Hunter\,” reverb-drenched pieces like “Junie\,” and the dynamic “Dearly Missed\,” before closing with the spectral “Geese.” Across the record\, Searows treats music as his most truthful form of communication\, inviting listeners into an immersive\, transforming experience that “engulfs” rather than simply plays in the background. \nIn addition to listening to the LP\, we’ll be raffling off some Searows-related giveaways among our guests. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:J DILLA - Donuts (2006)
DESCRIPTION:“Donuts was released on February 7\, 2006\, on Stones Throw Records\, on J Dilla’s 32nd birthday\, just three days before his death.” \nOn the morning of February 10\, 2006\, a Friday or Saturday\, I woke up super hyped\, knowing I would pick up a copy of Jay Dee’s brand new instrumental album\, which I had been long waiting for. HHV was called Hip Hop Vinyl and on top of this backpaper Hotel of the same yard. Being a beatmaker myself at that time\, Jay Dee\, as I was still calling him\, was my absolute favorite producer since the Ummah and Slum Village days. Every one of his productions would be analyzed\, deciphered\, and cherished. Records collected and Files looked up on Soulseek. \nOn that particular morning\, I turned on the computer and connected to the web just to check Okayplayer\, only to shockingly learn that my favorite musician of that time had died from his sickness. \nListening to the record that day felt very special\, and it gave the whole album an extraordinary beauty\, even though I didn’t really understand it at first. It took me a while to understand his departure from the soulful beats and grooves I loved to an incredible work of art on the sampler\, a true masterpiece. \nI’m happy to share this record with you\, 20 years after its release and the artist’s sad transition to another planet: James Dewitt Yancey\, aka Jay Dee\, aka J Dilla. \nIf you want more details about the record\, I can recommend Jordan Ferguson’s Donuts (33 1/3 Edition\, Bloomsbury) or the more complete and biographical Dilla Time by Dan Charnas (Swift Press). \n\n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:Drops x Rhinoceros - ONDE
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to ONDE — a wine & listening experience.\nMusic and wine share something invisible. Their rhythm\, texture and resonance reach us in ways that move us. \nWith ONDE\, we bring these two experiences closer together. \nOur first episode starts with the ground-breaking Moritz von Oswald Trio – Dissent. \nFounded in 2009 by Max Loderbauer\, Vladislav Delay and Dub Techno pioneer Moritz von Oswald as an open sound laboratory. For ‘Dissent’\, Moritz von Oswald has recently reformed with experimental musician Laurel Halo and Jazz drummer Heinrich Köbberling for a jazz-infused soundscape that could be described as proto-techno. A world of warped frequencies and sudden shifts — alive with motion and unpredictability that create something both unbound and magnetic. \nAs space is limited\, we can accommodate only 30 seats. \nTickets include a curated selection of 3 Glasses (à 0\,125L) of natural wines by Drops and fine cheeses (Terese Transalpin Feinkost) + bread and pickles. \nA special bottle list will also be available. \nTickets can be purchased directly  here: \nhttps://rhinoceros.sumupstore.com/product/drops-x-rhinoceros-onde \nDate: Thursday\, 11 December\nDoors: 6:00 pm\nNeedle drop: 7:00 pm (we kindly ask for silent listening)\nOpen for Walk-in: 9:00pm\nRecord: Moritz von Oswald Trio — Dissent \nWe hope to see you there\, \nRhinoceros × Oliver – Drops

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 53 – Keith Tippett & Louis Moholo – No Gossip (1980)
DESCRIPTION:Last session of 2025! \nWe will have a special guest: Markus Müller\, author of the book on F.M.P.\, the seminal Berlin label that shaped the sound of European free and avant-garde jazz. And on which was released tonight’s record! \nWe’ll dive into the history of the label and its musicians. \nAbou the LP: „This is simply one of the best free improvisation jazz albums around. Tippett is a woefully overlooked pianist whose technical abilities and musical sensibilities are vast. Coupled with the energetic drummer Louis Moholo\, these two have created a fiery\, frenetic\, but thoroughly captivating music.“ (Dean Suzuki\, Options) \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 52 - The Bill Dixon Orchestra – Intents and purposes (1967)
DESCRIPTION:Bill Dixon’s Intents and Purposes stands as one of the most profound yet criminally overlooked statements of 1960s jazz. Recorded at a time when the American free jazz movement was both exploding and fracturing\, Dixon’s sole major-label release presents a vision that is as rigorous in its structure as it is daring in its freedom. \nDixon’s trumpet serves more as a guiding presence than a traditional lead instrument. His sense of space recalls the European avant-garde and even contemporary classical composers\, but the music remains deeply rooted in the Black American jazz tradition. The orchestra’s careful balancing of improvisation and composition reveals Dixon’s role not just as a bandleader\, but as an architect of sound. \nIt is music that resists easy categorization: too structured for “free jazz\,” too expansive for “chamber jazz”. Listening today\, one realizes how far ahead Dixon was\, anticipating later developments in large-ensemble improvisation and compositional jazz. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the first order. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink! \n“Dark and mysterious. These are probably the best words to describe the music on Intents & Purposes from trumpet player and composer Bill Dixon. Unlike the manic frenzy that’s often found in free jazz of the same period\, this album is more solemn. There are\, of course\, bursts of energy from the soloists but they are subjected to the global texture of the music. Intents & Purposes is clearly an ensemble project and not a soloist one. The sound balance\, the orchestration and the arrangements are more important than individual prowess that is only used to spice the whole\, in a way similar to what Mingus did with his bands.“ (Timy Keller\, All music\, 23.09.15) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson "Winter in America" (Strata East - 1974)
DESCRIPTION: On Monday\, September 29\, we gather at Rhinoceros for a truly special moment: a collective listening of Winter in America\, the timeless masterpiece by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson. \nTheir music has played a central role in our journey. In September 2018\, we had the honor of welcoming the living legend Brian Jackson live with our JAW Family\, and in 2010 we witnessed Gil’s last Berlin show at the legendary Club Maria\, which was such a touching moment. \nThe record captures the disillusionment of post-civil rights America — a nation struggling with broken promises\, social injustice\, and political decay. Gil’s poetry\, paired with Brian’s warm and haunting arrangements\, creates a landscape that is deeply personal yet universally resonant. \nWhat makes Winter in America so important is its timelessness. Fifty-one years after its release\, the themes of inequality\, systemic failure\, and resilience still ring true. It’s more than an album — it’s a document of resistance\, a piece of living history\, and a reminder of the power of art to speak truth to its time and beyond. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink! \n \nBrian Jackson at Rhinoceros – Berlin 2018 / Sascha Blum \n \nGSH at Maria – Berlin 2010 / Ben De Biel

SUMMARY:Matti Klein "Soul Trio Bouncin’ In Bubbleverse"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pre-release listening session of Matti Klein: Soul Trio – Bouncin’ In Bubbleverse on Wednesday\, September 17. \nOut officially on September 26\, this third album by Matti Klein and his Soul Trio dives deep into the strange and beautiful worlds of jazz\, funk\, hip-hop\, and even space rock—bouncing between bubbles\, breaking boundaries\, and creating something truly their own. Centered around Klein’s warm Wurlitzer Electric Piano\, the rare Rhodes Bass\, and the expressive reedwork of Lars Dieterich\, with André Seidel’s flexible drumming holding it all together\, the trio delivers what Jazzwise once called “a new\, smokin’ hot twist on the much-loved organ trio format.” \nBouncin’ In Bubbleverse reflects years of touring and playing together\, with tracks that stretch\, echo\, and evolve beyond their first form—sometimes playful\, sometimes spiritual\, always grooving. This is music that keeps surprising\, inviting you to step outside your bubble and dance to odd times. \nPlease note: this is not a Monday-style listening session\, but an exclusive pre-release playback. We will play the record once at 7:00PM and once at 9:00PM for your enjoyment! \nThat means you’re welcome to order\, drink\, comment\, come and go as you like. Still\, we kindly ask you to respect the music and your fellow listeners—keep your conversations at a low volume so the details can be heard and enjoyed. 🙂 \nMatti and his band will be attending the session to answer your questions! So grab a drink\, stick around\, and join the conversation. \nAn event parts of the Matti Klein Soul Trio Berlin Tour — with more than 10 shows taking place across the city limits!

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 51: Marlais - Stream If Forms (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Listening session and artist talk: after the session Marlais will answer our questions and sing live from his repertoire!! \nMarlais reimagines English folk ballads through a global and experimental lens. \nInfluenced by Georgian polyphony\, Balkan and Corsican traditions\, Rembetiko\, throat singing\, and gamelan\, the album merges folk roots with electronic drones and layered textures. Songs like “Bird in the Bush” and “Blackwater Side” feature inventive arrangements: strings\, organs\, flutes\, and processed sounds; his plain\, affecting vocals\, akin to Sam Lee\, keep the emotional core intact. The result is a sensitive\, striking reinterpretation that balances authenticity with innovation. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 50: Canzoniere del Lazio – Miradas (1977)
DESCRIPTION:“Miradas” is a 1977 album by Canzoniere del Lazio\, a groundbreaking Italian folk-rock collective known for blending traditional music from Southern Italy with global influences. On Miradas\, the band expands its sonic palette further\, incorporating elements from Arabic\, Balkan\, and African musical traditions. With politically engaged lyrics and virtuosic musicianship\, Miradas captures the spirit of the 1970s Italian counterculture while reaching beyond national borders in its musical vision.

SUMMARY:J.Walia - Blue In Green
DESCRIPTION:We are very glad to welcome Joseph Walia behind the turntables\, a tailor\, photographer\, deep listener\, and longtime companion of us at Rhinoceros. For three years\, he lived between the bar’s shadows\, his neighborhood Wedding\, and the hum of blue notes\, shaping further a sensibility rooted in melancholy\, beauty\, and depth. \nNow back from Japan for a moment\, expect a deeply atmospheric set\, from Charles Mingus to Michel Petrucciani\, John Coltrane\, Mal Waldron\, Miles Davis\, and Duke Ellington\, just to name a few. Joseph’s selection isn’t about nostalgia\, but presence: music that lingers\, sways\, and speaks. \nTo complement the music\, we’ll be pouring rare wines by the glass\, wines with tension\, content\, clarity and honesty.

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 49: Emmanuelle Parrenin – Maison Rose (1977)
DESCRIPTION:Part one of our mini series dedicated to out-folk: Emmanuelle Parrenin’s  dreamy\, psychedelic folk masterpiece.\nWhat makes Maison Rose unique is the fusion between the experiences of Emmanuelle Parrenin\, who collected traditional songs in rural areas in a similar vein of Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins and the electroacoustic background of Bruno Menny\, who arranged and recorded the album. This alchemy created a perfect marriage of tradition and experimentation.\n\n\n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro fee will be charged on the first order. SUMMARY:Listening Session: Ichiko Aoba - Luminescent Creatures (2025)
DESCRIPTION:On July 7th\, a listening session will take place for Ichiko Aoba’s latest album\, Luminescent Creatures.\n\n\nThis album was inspired by bioluminescent plankton and the mysterious creatures of the deep sea. \nIt is a work that traces “the unseen” — the light\, life\, and emotions of the deep ocean. \nFlowing throughout the album is a sense of the subtle glow of the sea and a quiet resonance with nature. \nRather than traditional music\, it weaves moments like the breath before a voice\, the presence before a sound. \nI chose the intimate and gentle space of Rhinoceros to share this quietly glowing world. \nI hope we can spend time together in that dreamlike space\, listening closely to the faint flickers of life. \n\nKazumi\n\n  \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5€ fee will be charged on your first drink order. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 48: Maxine Troglauer – Hymn (2025)
DESCRIPTION:We’re more than stoked to have Maxine as a guest\, presenting her first LP “Hymn”. An album that not only moves effortlessly between past decades and genres\, but also freely between entire centuries. Her compositions and playing instructions range from baroque to classical to modern jazz\, to the avant-garde of our time and back again. \nChoosing to become a bass trombonist in today’s world takes talent\, courage\, and passion — all qualities that Maxine Troglauer embodies. Born in 1995 in Wiesbaden and now based in Berlin\, she has quickly risen to become one of Germany’s leading bass trombonists at just 30 years old. After completing a two-year Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York under legendary bass trombonist David Taylor in 2021\, Troglauer took on a diverse range of musical projects. These included performances with the Munich Symphony Orchestra\, ECM jazz pianist Florian Weber\, and the HR Big Band. Troglauer’s artistic vision is to bridge cultural divides rather than reinforce outdated genre boundaries. Whether in jazz\, classical\, contemporary\, or improvised music — she sees no strict lines\, only creative opportunities. Her sound is rich and distinctive: simultaneously grand and humble\, light yet deeply emotional — transcending traditional categories and resonating beyond everyday concerns. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n  \n \n\nPlease note that this event was initially planned for Monday June 16th and has been rescheduled.
