DESCRIPTION:Teshi’s Fine Hour is proud to host the ongoing Susumu Yokota World Listening Tour with a full LP playback of ‘The Boy and the Tree’ (Skintone Edition) at Berlin’s Rhinoceros \nDo not miss the rare chance to experience recently remastered and reissued sounds of the classic with pristine and high-fidelity audio at Rhinoceros \nDate: Monday 23rd February  \nTime: Bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM \nNo reservations – First come\, first served.  \nWe kindly ask for silent listening during the session.  \nAbout Boy and the Tree:  \nThe Boy and the Tree was composed after a visit to Yakushima Island\, an outstandingly beautiful world heritage site off the southern tip of Japan\, scored by a deep\, lush and ancient ravine\, home of the ancient 7000-year old ‘Jōmon Sugi’. Tree. Also the inspiration for Miyazaki’s epic anime Princess Mononoke\, a conflict between the rampant greed and destructive force of humanity\, and the stoic\, mysterious fragility of nature. \nSusumu Yokota World Listening Tour: \nSusumu Yokota redefined ambient music with a series of 14 extraordinary albums\, released from 1998 through to 2012. At the height of this success\, he abandoned his graphic design practice and his commercial music career and established the Skintone imprint. His lasting influence and impact on electronic and contemporary music is difficult to overstate. This event is part of a celebration of this legacy. \nFollow @susumuyokotaofficial and @lorecordings and @rhinoceros.berlin for updates on new events.

And on which was released tonight’s record! \nWe’ll dive into the history of the label and its musicians. \nAbou the LP: „This is simply one of the best free improvisation jazz albums around. SUMMARY:Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson "Winter in America" (Strata East - 1974)
DESCRIPTION: On Monday\, September 29\, we gather at Rhinoceros for a truly special moment: a collective listening of Winter in America\, the timeless masterpiece by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson. \nTheir music has played a central role in our journey. In September 2018\, we had the honor of welcoming the living legend Brian Jackson live with our JAW Family\, and in 2010 we witnessed Gil’s last Berlin show at the legendary Club Maria\, which was such a touching moment. \nThe record captures the disillusionment of post-civil rights America — a nation struggling with broken promises\, social injustice\, and political decay. Gil’s poetry\, paired with Brian’s warm and haunting arrangements\, creates a landscape that is deeply personal yet universally resonant. \nWhat makes Winter in America so important is its timelessness. Fifty-one years after its release\, the themes of inequality\, systemic failure\, and resilience still ring true. It’s more than an album — it’s a document of resistance\, a piece of living history\, and a reminder of the power of art to speak truth to its time and beyond. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink! \n \nBrian Jackson at Rhinoceros – Berlin 2018 / Sascha Blum \n \nGSH at Maria – Berlin 2010 / Ben De Biel

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 51: Marlais - Stream If Forms (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Listening session and artist talk: after the session Marlais will answer our questions and sing live from his repertoire!! \nMarlais reimagines English folk ballads through a global and experimental lens. \nInfluenced by Georgian polyphony\, Balkan and Corsican traditions\, Rembetiko\, throat singing\, and gamelan\, the album merges folk roots with electronic drones and layered textures. Songs like “Bird in the Bush” and “Blackwater Side” feature inventive arrangements: strings\, organs\, flutes\, and processed sounds; his plain\, affecting vocals\, akin to Sam Lee\, keep the emotional core intact. The result is a sensitive\, striking reinterpretation that balances authenticity with innovation. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 48: Maxine Troglauer – Hymn (2025)
DESCRIPTION:We’re more than stoked to have Maxine as a guest\, presenting her first LP “Hymn”. An album that not only moves effortlessly between past decades and genres\, but also freely between entire centuries. Her compositions and playing instructions range from baroque to classical to modern jazz\, to the avant-garde of our time and back again. \nChoosing to become a bass trombonist in today’s world takes talent\, courage\, and passion — all qualities that Maxine Troglauer embodies. Born in 1995 in Wiesbaden and now based in Berlin\, she has quickly risen to become one of Germany’s leading bass trombonists at just 30 years old. After completing a two-year Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York under legendary bass trombonist David Taylor in 2021\, Troglauer took on a diverse range of musical projects. These included performances with the Munich Symphony Orchestra\, ECM jazz pianist Florian Weber\, and the HR Big Band. Troglauer’s artistic vision is to bridge cultural divides rather than reinforce outdated genre boundaries. Whether in jazz\, classical\, contemporary\, or improvised music — she sees no strict lines\, only creative opportunities. Her sound is rich and distinctive: simultaneously grand and humble\, light yet deeply emotional — transcending traditional categories and resonating beyond everyday concerns. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n  \n \n\nPlease note that this event was initially planned for Monday June 16th and has been rescheduled.

SUMMARY:Symposium For Jazzcats: OVERSÁEZ - Abstract emotions (Boomslang Records - 2025)
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome you to the third edition of the Symposium for Jazzcats this year\, where we continue our exploration of this years central question: What does “free” mean in the context of jazz? \nThis time\, we’re thrilled to host Sandro Sáez from the trio OVERSÁEZ\, as we also celebrate the release of their debut album\, Abstract Emotions\, on Boomslang Records. OVERSÁEZ — a Berlin-based piano trio featuring Sáez\, Westergaard\, and Ott — recorded the album in January 2025 at the legendary MPS Studio in Villingen. \nTheir music blends elements of European classical traditions\, jazz\, and open improvisation. The result is a sound that moves seamlessly between carefully structured compositions and spontaneous\, intuitive freedom — a perfect fit for our ongoing theme. \nOur previous sessions touched on different facets of “freedom” in jazz: \nIn the first session\, we hosted Joe Hertenstein with his Core Trio + Matthew Shipp\, where we discussed the democratic nature of group improvisation. \nIn the second session\, we explored Ornette Coleman’s “Free Jazz”\, a radical concept that pushed the idea of freedom beyond composition and improvisation\, even into the recording process itself\, by placing the two simultaneously playing quartets in separate stereo channels: one on the left\, the other on the right. \nNow\, with OVERSÁEZ\, we continue the conversation. We’re eager to hear their music — and their thoughts — on what it means to play and create freely within jazz today. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday! \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stemeseder-Lillinger - Penumbra II (Plaist Records - 2025)
DESCRIPTION:We will gather on this late spring Monday evening to listen to Stemeseder-Lillinger’s latest effort\, Penumbra II\, to be released on Plaist Records later this month. \nIn presence of the Artists\, STEMESEDER-LILLINGER a collaborative producer-duo of composer-performers Elias Stemeseder (b. 1990) and Christian Lillinger (b. 1984). \nDrawing from various strains of contemporary and historic music and sound art practices\, the duo’s work makes use of a wealth of compositional strategies\, instruments\, and production methods\, seeking to create an uncompromisingly personal sonic idiom through synthesis of disparate modes of musical thought. This has been documented via the LP releases PENUMBRA\, ANTUMBRA\, and the upcoming PENUMBRA II (all on Plaist Records)\, as well as through a series of video works. A central pillar of the duo’s artistic practice is collaboration with contemporaries\, which has been documented in their UMBRA catalogue on Intakt Records and features guest artists such as Craig Taborn\, Peter Evans\, and DoYeon Kim. Their work has been presented at unerhört! (Zürich\, Switzerland)\, BIMHUIS 50 (Amsterdam\, Netherlands)\, Casa del Libro UNAM (Mexico City)\, De/Semble (Vienna\, Austria)\, Cerkno (Slovenia)\, A L’Arme! (Berlin\, Germany)\, and Schwere Reiter (Munich\, Germany)\, among others. \n  \nhttps://www.plaist-music.com/  \n  \n✨ We open 6:30 PM\, needle drop 8:30 PM.\n✨ RSVP Only. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 47: Miles Davis - Nefertiti (Columbia - 1968)
DESCRIPTION:Another classic record to (re)discover and (re)listen together!\n“Nefertiti” encapsulates a pivotal moment in Miles Davis’ career and jazz history\, marking a significant departure from established norms and venturing into uncharted sonic territories. The album’s genius lies in its innovative approach to harmony\, rhythm\, and ensemble interaction\, all meticulously captured through groundbreaking production techniques. \nThe album emphasizes ensemble interaction\, with musicians engaging in a continuous dialogue\, reacting to and building upon each other’s musical ideas. Solos\, in the traditional sense\, are minimized\, replaced by a dense and intricate sonic tapestry where individual voices merge into a unified whole. \n  \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 45: Kink Gong – Myth [神话] (2023 Bié Records)
DESCRIPTION:Kink Gong’s Myth is a hypnotic and disorienting journey through the fringes of traditional music and electronic deconstruction. Laurent Jeanneau continues his exploration of Southeast Asian field recordings\, warping and weaving them into something entirely new—part archival document\, part sonic hallucination. Unlike some of his earlier works that lean more on raw ethnographic recordings\, Myth embraces a deeply textural and surreal approach. Familiar sounds—plucked strings\, chanted vocals\, and ritualistic percussions—are stretched\, layered\, and manipulated into haunting\, dreamlike compositions. The album feels like it exists in a liminal space\, where ancient sounds meet the ghosts of future electronic landscapes. \nLaurent Jeanneau\, a nomadic musician and DIY ethnographer\, established his recording archive and composition project\, Kink Gong\, in 1999. His journey began in 1991 when he left his homeland of France to travel solo from Kenya to Nigeria. Over the years\, he has made numerous trips across Southeast Asia—including Cambodia\, Laos\, Vietnam\, China\, and Thailand—documenting the traditional music of ethnic minorities whose cultures are at risk due to modernization. Jeanneau incorporates these recordings into his own electroacoustic experiments\, blending them with other field recordings. \n

SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 42 - Quartabé – Repescagem (LP 2024 - Fun in the Curch)
DESCRIPTION:For the last session of the year we’re happy to have Mariá Portugal as a special guest!\nOne of the most brilliant and active musicians in the European free/impro scene will present the latest record of her band and engage with us in a Q&A session. \nQuartabê delves deep into the Brazilian musical heritage\, unearthing undervalued gems and reworking them with their playful approach. The group’s interpretations combine samba\, jazz\, electronic textures\, and experimental sounds\, creating a complex tapestry that is continually surprising. \nQuartabê’s identity was built upon the metaphor of the classroom: the group sees itself as a school class\, which chooses its own teachers from among great masters of Brazilian music. Assuming that the learning and creative processes have in common experimentation and play\, the quartet is characterized by its bold versions coupled with irreverent performance. \nIn addition to its sound\, marked by the group’s various music references – from the São Paulo avant-garde movement to the free improvisation\, passing through pop and electronic music – Quartabê also stands out for the formation composed mostly of women who\, besides instrumentalists are also arrangers\, composers\, singers and improvisers – which is unusual in Brazil and it has high political relevance in a music scene where positions of creation and power are still held disproportionately by men. \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM. Needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ Tickets (5 Euro) for the session available at the door. No reservations\, sorry.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!\n✨ No room for squares is dedicated to the discovery\, promotion and shared listening of genre-challenging music: artists and records that don’t fit into specific categories but bend and break the boundaries between and across them. We love the visionaries\, the outsiders\, those who dare to look into the abyss and are not scared to explore new ways. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Anenon - Moons Melt Milk Light
DESCRIPTION:A Listening Session in presence of the Artist followed by a live solo sax performance and an artist talk\, moderated by journalist Stephan Kunze (Zen Sounds) \nAnenon @anenonmusic is the ongoing solo studio and live project of Brian Allen Simon\, whom since 2010 has released multiple albums and EPs to critical acclaim. \n„Moons Melt Milk Light“ is direct\, efficient\, and unwavering in its immediacy. Anenon departs from the electronics of previous works\, and embarks on a reductive\, almost entirely acoustic approach consisting of piano\, tenor saxophone\, bass clarinet\, and field recordings. All of the music was improvised with everything recorded as either a first or second take with no edits. \nMoons Melt Milk Light is a hyper-personal statement contained in a visceral beauty\, a compact record of threadbare honesty and musical prowess seldom found in the musical art form. It is a search for light out of dark\, for the tangible and tactile\, and yet like most art of staying power\, the results remain ephemeral and elusive\, a beauty just out of reach. \n“Loss has been a constant (in my life)\, and I wanted to express a deep acceptance of this\, but also a pervasive feeling that these kinds of sadnesses are what beauty is derived from\, that it doesn’t come from perfection. I find the idea of perfect beauty completely banal. Tension matters.” \n„Moons Melt Milk“ is released on Tonal Union\, an Independent record label imprint run by Adam Heron. Formed in 2022 as an outlet for genre-blurring works and with an ethos to seek out unique forms of sound expression. @tonalunion \n✨ Doors 6:30\n✨ Needle Drops 8:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\n✨ Ticket 12€ at the door – limited capacity –\n✨ No reservations. SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 28 - Devin Gray – Most Definitely (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Devin Gray – “Most Definitely ” (Rataplan Records 2023) \nFor this session we’ll have the talented Berlin-based Devin Gray as guest\, for a Q&A after we’ll listen together to his latest release: “My music is a result of deliberate experimental decisions which often obscure common musical practices\, all the while trying to weave in spontaneous forms from the fringes.” Individual track’s stories deliver unique musical moods: Blues (in the standard form)\, diverse textures such as ASMR\, and hints of “A Night In Tunisia” mixed with industrial acoustic Autechre inspirations. \n«‘Most Definitely’ is an example of just how creative a musician can be with a set of drums and a few additions. Gray explores what he believes the world needs more of – sonic energy. In twenty-three tracks\, mostly delivered at speed\, Gray proves he is continually thinking outside conventional boxes in terms of percussive sounds and rhythm variations. The patterns interweave and create remarkable twists\, and alterations of hue and volume that work together to form a mesmeric soundscape splashed with tonal colour and textural variation. The creativity is astounding\, and the tracks include barely-whispered sections to thunking\, booming timpanic episodes.» (Sammy Stein) \n  \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM / The needle drops at 8:30 PM sharp. \n✨ Free entrance – limited capacity – no reservations. \n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record. \n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink! \n
