SUMMARY:No Room For Squares Session 51: Marlais - Stream If Forms (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Listening session and artist talk: after the session Marlais will answer our questions and sing live from his repertoire!! \nMarlais reimagines English folk ballads through a global and experimental lens. \nInfluenced by Georgian polyphony\, Balkan and Corsican traditions\, Rembetiko\, throat singing\, and gamelan\, the album merges folk roots with electronic drones and layered textures. Songs like “Bird in the Bush” and “Blackwater Side” feature inventive arrangements: strings\, organs\, flutes\, and processed sounds; his plain\, affecting vocals\, akin to Sam Lee\, keep the emotional core intact. The result is a sensitive\, striking reinterpretation that balances authenticity with innovation. \n✨ The bar opens at 6:30 PM\, needle drop at 8:30 PM.\n✨ A 5 Euro entry ticket will be charged on the orders. No reservations.\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the record.\n✨ Come early and stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:Joshua Crumbly - LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service Live Music – Short Notice Announcement! 🙂 \nWe had the pleasure of hosting Josh at the bar back in November 2022\, alongside his longtime friend Samora Pinderhugues. Now\, we’re delighted to welcome him back for an intimate solo session this Sunday! \nIn a world divided\, the music of Joshua Crumbly takes the listener to a place that is uniquely unified\, not just in the styles he blends but in the commonality of the emotions and ideas his songs suggest. \nThe acclaimed Bassist\, Composer\, Producer has toured and or collaborated / recorded with the likes of Kamasi Washington\, Cautious Clay\, Leon Bridges\, Terence Blanchard\, Stefon Harris\, Anthony Wilson\, Cass McCombs & Bob Dylan. \nIn 2020\, Joshua distinguished himself as a solo artist with the release of his debut full length album “Rise” & followed up with his second LP a year later entitled “ForEver” – both of which garnered critical acclaim. “Very thoughtful\, very spare music that… takes you on a journey in an almost spiritual way” – NPR Music. \nJoshua’s latest project an EP (released Feb 8\, 2024) entitled “P.S.” Erik Bodin & Hákan Wirenstrand of Swedish Pop group Little Dragon\, Michael Rocketship as well as\, Multi-Disciplinary Artist\, Singer-Songwriter Samora Pinderhughes. \nThe Sunday Service at Rhinoceros is a series of live concerts in a small acoustic or minimally amplified setting. Infused with the essence of jazz and maybe the spirit of John Coltrane\, it invites musical talents in an intimate space to create a communal experience. Through shared vibrations and soulful harmonies\, it calls for a sense of unity\, awakening consciousness and a connection to beauty. \nDoors 06:00PM\nShow Starts 08:00PM \nWe recommend a minimum 10€ (bring cash with you!) contribution per person for the live music. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Flatland Prayer - LIVE
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present Flatland Prayer – live in session for the very first Sunday Service at Rhinocéros! \nFlatland Prayer reimagines songwriting in a free-improv context. The eclectic trio is firmly rooted in the traditions of American jazz and folk\, though always with one foot forward into avant-garde scene. Though their influences are broad-reaching\, Flatland Prayer has a cohesive sound\, with all the clarity and tenderness of the musicians behind it. \nFlatland Prayer is already making a name for themselves in the European jazz scene. This is as much to do with their musicianship as their unique approach to performance\, in which every through-composed set has its own narrative flow\, readily incorporating elements of performance art\, visuals\, and spoken word. For a performance at the Bimhuis as a part of Jazzfest Amsterdam on the 6th of January\, bassist River Adomeit composed “FANATIC\,” an Americana suite exploring far-right extremism. On the heels of their debut album\, “Like Staring Straight into the Sun\,” Flatland Prayer is now embarking on their first international tour\, bringing their unique sound to broader audiences in the Netherlands\, Germany\, and Austria. We hope to hold Sunday Service once per season. \nFLATLAND PRAYER  \nLīva Dumpe – Vocals\nAntonio Moreno – Trumpet\nRiver Adomeit – Bass \nDoors 06:30PM\nShow Starts 08:00PM \nTable charge 15\,-€ \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Growth Eternal (Leaving Records - L.A.) LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Support: merma suelo (mexico)\nDoors 06:30 PM \nLive 08:00 PM \nTickets 15€ available at the door \nFor our second live performance this year\, Rhinoceros is excited to present two groundbreaking artists\, backed by the rich history of jazz bass and ambient music\, whose work challenges conventions and invites us to envision a more heartfelt future. Their innovative sounds open our bodies and minds to new possibilities\, where sensitivity and creativity intertwine—a future where we could be closer to nature and to our own nature. \nThe Growth Eternal is a spiritual bass & vocoder music project. Tulsa\, Oklahoma native Ghalani started the project in 2018 for their mental health\, feeling disillusioned with college jazz academia while trying to connect with their ancestral lineage. They started making music with plants to shine a light on plant’s self-sovereignty and give praise to the wisdom of plant life. Ghalani’s music textures take you on an emotional journey\, using sound as medicine by weaving through genres in a way that feels grounded and refreshingly innovative at the same time. \nmerma suelo is a multifaceted poet traveling between layers to listen and transform the living and emerging relational dynamics with and within her. For this\, they focus on sound\, water and practices like ritual\, divination and romance. merma creates sonic processes aiming to share magic and questions\, while allowing space for improvisation\, so that something new may come. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Anenon - Moons Melt Milk Light
DESCRIPTION:A Listening Session in presence of the Artist followed by a live solo sax performance and an artist talk\, moderated by journalist Stephan Kunze (Zen Sounds) \nAnenon @anenonmusic is the ongoing solo studio and live project of Brian Allen Simon\, whom since 2010 has released multiple albums and EPs to critical acclaim. \n„Moons Melt Milk Light“ is direct\, efficient\, and unwavering in its immediacy. Anenon departs from the electronics of previous works\, and embarks on a reductive\, almost entirely acoustic approach consisting of piano\, tenor saxophone\, bass clarinet\, and field recordings. All of the music was improvised with everything recorded as either a first or second take with no edits. \nMoons Melt Milk Light is a hyper-personal statement contained in a visceral beauty\, a compact record of threadbare honesty and musical prowess seldom found in the musical art form. It is a search for light out of dark\, for the tangible and tactile\, and yet like most art of staying power\, the results remain ephemeral and elusive\, a beauty just out of reach. \n“Loss has been a constant (in my life)\, and I wanted to express a deep acceptance of this\, but also a pervasive feeling that these kinds of sadnesses are what beauty is derived from\, that it doesn’t come from perfection. I find the idea of perfect beauty completely banal. Tension matters.” \n„Moons Melt Milk“ is released on Tonal Union\, an Independent record label imprint run by Adam Heron. Formed in 2022 as an outlet for genre-blurring works and with an ethos to seek out unique forms of sound expression. @tonalunion \n✨ Doors 6:30\n✨ Needle Drops 8:30\n✨ Silent listening for the length of the main record\n✨ Ticket 12€ at the door – limited capacity –\n✨ No reservations. SUMMARY:River Adomeit - Solo Bass (LIVE)
DESCRIPTION:After playing at the Rhino with Paul Brandl last year\, River is back\, this time solo to present his new record “Like Staring Straight into the Sun” made with his trio Flatland Prayer. \nRiver’s playing combines a deep knowledge and appreciation of American jazz and folk music with that of other world traditions\, which have been solidified through tours across Japan\, Brazil\, India\, Nepal\, South Africa\, Israel\, and Western Europe. \nHaving earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and his master’s summa cum laude from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam\, River is now firmly rooted in the Amsterdam music scene\, and has performed with improvised music luminaries such as Jamey Haddad\, Anat Cohen\, Joris Roelofs\, Billy Childs\, and Matt Wilson. \nHis bold and concentrated approach to composition and performance has earned him the title of Jonge Maker for Jazzfest Amsterdam 2024\, where he is using the position to explore unique influences of contemporary Classical music on improvisation and vice versa. \nAs leader of improv-folk trio Flatland Prayer\, River takes an interdisciplinary approach to songwriting\, seamlessly incorporating elements of theater\, visual arts\, and spoken word. \nriveradomeit.com/flatland-prayer \nhttps://flatlandprayer.bandcamp.com/album/like-staring-straight-into-the-sun \n✨The bar opens at 6:30 PM\n✨ Concert starts 8:30 PM \n✨ Table charge of 10€ p.P\n✨ We ask for silent listening during the live.\n✨ Come early and/or stay late for a chat and a drink!

SUMMARY:JONATHAN BOCKELMANN (Git) Live
DESCRIPTION:A rare and intimate small concert at the bar! \nJonathan Bockelmann presents a series of light\, serene acoustic guitar vignettes. The Munich-born musician has studied classical guitar for about two decades\, perfecting his technique and gaining mastery of the instrument alongside work with his electronic duo GLASKIN. His latest Album\, Childish Mind sees him explore a new compositional path by crafting delicately interwoven melodies for the acoustic guitar. From the gentle webs and patterns Jonathan creates\, there’s a sense of meditativeness throughout the album—his music radiates out\, filling moments with a sense of ease and calmness. \nWe open 18:30 \nLive starts 20:00 \nTable Charge 7\,-€ pP \nReservation recommended hello@rhinoceros-berlin.com \nNo Talking allowed while Jonathan is playing. \nThank you in advance for your help. \nChildish Mind by Jonathan Bockelmann

SUMMARY:SAMORA PINDERHUGHES TRIO - LIVE
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome one of the most singular singers\, activist\, pianist and composer NYC based Samora Pinderhughes for his Berlin debut at our small Jazz Bar for a very intimate session. \nThe capacity is very limited so we´ve put 40 tickets only on sales via Eventbrite ( HERE ) when they are gone\, they are gone. No guestlist on this one obviously. You know the deal. \n!! SOLD OUT !!\n  \nBUT \nSecond early set added \nGet your tix here while you can! \nhttps://www.eventbrite.de/e/additional-set-jaw-with-samora-pinderhughes-trio-tickets-453931781177 \n  \nLINE UP: \nSamora Pinderhughes (Vox/Keys)\nJosh Crumbley (Vox\, Electric Bass)\nElliott Skinner (Vox/Guitar) \n \nSamora Pinderhughes is a composer\, pianist/vocalist\, interdisciplinary artist\, and surrealist whose work delves into all the things our society tries to hide – about its history\, about its structures\, and about the individual and daily things we all experience but don’t know how to talk about. His art is an invitation to feel things deeply\, and to think deeply about how we all live. He is known for his honest lyrics\, his harmonic language\, his vulnerable visuals\, his sociopolitical commentary\, and his commitment to making art that is of use to everyday life. \nPinderhughes is a sought-after collaborator with an eye for the bigger picture and has worked with the likes of Robert Glasper\, Karriem Riggins and Common under the August Greene moniker\, as well as Burniss Travis\, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah or his sister & flautist Elena Pinderhughes. He uses his music to examine sociopolitical issues and fight for change\, working in the tradition of the black surrealists throughout the African Diaspora\, those who bend word\, sound\, and image towards the causes of revolution. Pinderhughes is a prison and police abolitionist\, an anti-capitalist\, and an advocate for process over product. \nHis first major political music project was „The Transformations Suite“\, combining music\, theatre\, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within the communities of the African Diaspora and was followed by The Black Spring EP in 2020\, as well as his critically acclaimed ‘Grief’ earlier this year.
