Marlais reimagines English folk ballads through a global and experimental lens.

Influenced by Georgian polyphony, Balkan and Corsican traditions, Rembetiko, throat singing, and gamelan, the album merges folk roots with electronic drones and layered textures. Songs like “Bird in the Bush” and “Blackwater Side” feature inventive arrangements: strings, organs, flutes, and processed sounds; his plain, affecting vocals, akin to Sam Lee, keep the emotional core intact. The result is a sensitive, striking reinterpretation that balances authenticity with innovation.
