An unprecedented dive into Japanese nightlife and its fantasies: Jérôme Schmidt and Yann Stofer open the doors to the world of Japanese nightlife, its fantasies and its businesses. From love hotels to prostitution islands, from private cabarets to home-based love dolls, they lift the veil on this codified universe reserved for Japanese erotomaniacs. “For several trips, several years, I’d been spending my nights in strange Japanese Babylons. Here, yes, everything was permitted. Here, every fantasy had a physical and geographical answer. Here, everything was a solution.” Jérôme Schmidt discovered Japan over twenty years ago as a musician with Richard Pinhas and Maurice G. Dantec, before founding Inculte publishing in 2004. A documentary filmmaker (Arte, CBC…), he is also the author of books and guides on Japan published by Les Arènes. Yann Stofer is a photographer and director for advertising and film. Author of photographic books, he is currently working on the documentary Sang épais – chez les derniers intouchables japonais, in collaboration with Jérôme Schmidt.
