First Listen Session: David Murray – Birdly Serenade (Impulse! – 2025)

Exclusive playback of legendary tenor saxophonist David Murray’s @theofficialdavidmurray new album on Impulse!, Birdly Serenade — a stunning release that’s part of the Birdsong Project @birdsongproject, a community dedicated to protecting bird life and celebrating the joy and mystery of birdsong.

A beautiful album, deeply inspired by the idea of birdsong, recorded at the iconic Van Gelder Studio. Featuring an all-star trio: pianist Marta Sánchez, bassist Luke Stewart, and drummer Russell Carter.

Blending free jazz, gospel, blues, and avant-garde influences, Murray has released over 150 albums as a leader and collaborated with legends like McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Max Roach. Renowned for his powerful improvisation and deep emotional expression, Murray continues to push boundaries while honoring jazz traditions, making him one of the most vital voices in contemporary jazz.

We’ll be playing more records by David Murray after the album playback.

The record will be played from 6:30 PM and a second time at 8:30 PM .

Note that this event is not a usual listening session in the way we do it on mondays. It is an exclusive playback before release, means, you are able to talk, order, drink, comment, come and go.
